Interesting info, read "The Rats in the walls" when I was about thirteen not a good idea. Often wondered who wrote it. gave me nightmares for many years after.

Dino is right Lovecraft is dealing with the Occult . life on Mars. Pincher Martin and possibly Donnie Darko are dealing with alternate realities created by people who are dying (not dead but in that limbo just before passing). Now maybe there is a relationship to archaeology as the rituals people practiced when dealing with death are often to aid that transition. When you look at what literature has done with this subject it is very probable there were complex believe systems and rituals to deal with the transition.

i think you must be referring to 'dendrochronologically derived' dated from charred material, but i think he meant the calibration of c14 determinations so he is in fact correct

I think you've nailed what he must have originally read that generated his confusion, but it doesn't look as if he gets the difference between the two. He drifts from a critique of straight dendro to what has to be c14 with no change in terminology.

I read a collection of Lovecraft stories when I was at uni. Can never look at a boarded up church belfry the same!

I liked the take on Cthulu in Hellboy I.

I've always interpreted Donnie Darko as time travel in a linear time version of the universe/ superhero story. He travels back in time to save the girly. But that's why its such a masterpiece..........it doesn't explain itself and keeps you thinking

Indeed... personally I have always wondered if Donnie had any control at all. Next time you watch the movie observe whether he does anything deliberate to save Gretchen...surely it's Frank who saves Donnie at the beginning of the film that ultimately leads to Gretchen being saved after Frank has killed her!! God I love that movie.....

I thought the Smurfette bit was hilarious. They had to ask permission from Peyo's estate (the creator) in Belgium to use the Smurfs in the script. They agreed, didn't bat an eyelid about it and said that Donnie had shown a perfect understanding of how things work in the Smurf world.

Nah Donnie dies first time when the plane engine falls on his bed but in the moment of death he is granted the privilege of seeing his death saves someone else.

I have good news for you: the HP Lovecraft Historical Society have produced two superb films based on Lovecraft short stories. The first (and better, IMHO) is The Call of Cthulhu, released in 2005. The Whisperer in Darkness was released last year, based on the short story of the same name. Very highly recommended!

Guillermo del Toro was trying to make a production of At the Mountains of Madness (and if anyone could do Lovecraft well on film, he could) but it's been squashed.
