Atlas of Hillforts ? 1 million well spent?
Posted by: BAJR - 8th July 2013, 10:11 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (27)

I have looked in awe at the form... and am baffled. I have looked in awe at the million pound grant and am shocked. Hells teeth... for years people have numbered ditches and banks ( which you could do from google earth. ) and er... you are no closer to knowing anything about them... ANYTHING!!!

What am I talking about?

Quote:Prof Gary Lock, of Oxford University, said: "We want to shed new light on why they were created and how they were used."

Despite their large numbers there has been little academic work on hill forts, how they were used and how they varied across Britain and Ireland, the researchers say.

with 1 million pounds We could excavate and date the major phases of activity of almost ALL the hillforts in Scotland (for example) . yes... we could date, survey and record almost every hillfort in Scotland

This is academics not understanding the citizen who they want to carry out their work for them... yipes.

CAn't say I am impressed. Am I being unfair.

and what extra will we learn that we did not know before?

[h=1]An Atlas of Hillforts in Britain and Ireland[/h]

Hillforts are one of the most prominent types of prehistoric monument across many parts the British Isles and Ireland as well as being the most obvious legacy of the Iron Age period. Despite fieldwork and changing interpretations of these iconic sites they are still poorly understood in terms of documenting and analysing the variation in characteristics and form across regional and national boundaries.

The Atlas of Hillforts Project has just been awarded £950,000 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to try and remedy this situation.

Version 1 (June 2013)

  Archaeology and its Media
Posted by: BAJR - 4th July 2013, 05:09 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (1)

Prof. Dr. Annetta Alexandridis is serving as Guest Editor for a special issue of the online, open access journal, Arts (http://mdpi.com/journal/arts) about " Archaeology and its Media " (http://www.mdpi.com/journal/arts/special...logy_media).

The special issue is interested in the interplay of archaeology and these media, the scientific and socio-political agendas at play in archaeological research, and the impact of different media on knowledge production from an aesthetic, epistemic and cognitive point of view. Articles may focus on historical or contemporary phenomena.

  Cliffe At Hoo Historic society
Posted by: BAJR - 3rd July 2013, 04:08 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (1)

[h=5]Hi I will try to keep this post brief as I can . I’m fortunate enough to live in an extremely historic part of the UK at the mouth of the Thames estuary on the Hoo peninsular. I’ve always had an active interest in the historic landscape and archaeology here and 7 years ago decided to undertake a complete critical assessment. This involve all recorded information from HER/PAS/NMR and the archived material available from many sources (to many to detail). Site identification from extensive mapping and aerial photos. The problem I am having is with disseminating the vast amount of information, finding comparable sites and help with active investigations. Much of my work has been peer reviewed by various professionals in different aspects of the study, all agree from the information I’ve forwarded that my conclusion have merit, so I am posting here in the hope that it might excite some interest (from students, local professionals or university’s) with a view to help with digs or advice/site identification. The following brief statements are just to outline some of the more significant aspects of the landscape here that might be of interest that I could use help with. The study area includes a range of sites and settlements ranging from an Iron Age Civitas; several Roman industrial and administration centers as well as what is suggested to be the first Roman crossing point of the Thames; Anglo Saxon Cathedral priory establishment, assembly places and associated locations; Medieval sites and even a medieval castle; all the way to Post medieval structures that include Lime works and a wartime fort and ammunition factory.

More detail can be found at our (Cliffe At Hoo Historic society website or our more detailed active Facebook group)

If this is of interest then please visit our website, post any questions or private message me for more details. Just to reiterate I am look for help with the study in general, site identification, active investigations.[/h]Kind Regards

  Is this Restriction of Trade?
Posted by: BAJR - 28th June 2013, 08:51 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (63)

Seems like de ja vu - but I have now heard that one of the first acts of Paul Belford - the new Director of the Clywd Powys Archaeology Trust is to drop ALL non IfA or Registered Organisation from a list of contractors available for work in the area. whether or not they have carried out work successfully there in the past. it seems the same is happening in Dyfed.

While on one hand, it is laudable that they are taking a stand against rogue contractors and those archaeologists who refuse to allow themselves to be subject to the harsh disciplinary procedures that can be brought into effect should they er.. do something bad in archaeology... and that the in depth and regular examination of a companies competence in the RO scheme by the IfA scrutineers -

I do have a couple of questions.

one is in regard to the legality of creating a list of approved contractors in the first place and the restriction of trade.

the other is the ability of a Director of a Trust to make a major decision like this - with legal advice I hope.

Back in 2011 for example - a Building firm was found to have been unlawfully removed from a council approved contractors list. and the list goes on. The question must be asked. under what provision did this decision come into force? what was the reason for it? and what legal advice was sought before dropping non ROs from the list. thus effectively forcing people to join the IfA - not because they want to, but because they have to... not the best way to drum up members imho. This is in effect restriction of trade.

I do agree that barriers to work must be in place. --- is this the best way forward? not sure.

I look forward to any reply.

IfA and the Royal Charter - update on progress
Posted by: kevin wooldridge - 21st June 2013, 01:41 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (91)

The following message has been posted to IfA members who subscribe to the IfA e-bulletin. I don't think I am breaking any confidences in reproducing it here....

'We are pleased to inform members that IfA has been invited to proceed to the next stage in the process of applying for a Royal Charter of Incorporation by submitting a formal Petition to the Privy Council.

In order for us to submit this application, Council will be taking a formal resolution to the 2013 AGM in October asking members to vote on the proposed Petition and revised proposed charter and by-laws. These will be prepared by our legal advisors and released on the website following the August Council meeting for members to read and consider....

....The resolution to submit the formal Petition will require the support of 75% of the members who vote. The motion will be conditional: if it is carried the Institute will continue under its present constitution until and unless the Privy Council approves the application'

  Northamptonshire Archaeology
Posted by: NWA - 19th June 2013, 04:22 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (27)

Greetings BAJR-lings,

Having made a pig's ear of their previous attempts to break out of Greater London, I hear that MOLA are now in the process of buying Northamptonshire Archaeology from the cash-strapped county council.

Whilst MOLA are great at doing high-value urban archaeology and employ some amazing people, the only thing I can realistically say to any NA staff out there is 'god help you'.

over and out.........
