British Museum given rock art from Sudan
Museum given ancient rock art from Sudan
The British Museum has been given 20 pieces of rock art after helping to unearth finds from the Ku****e kingdom in northern Sudan.....

Its that old half and half divide the spoils again...

:face-huh: comments? should I have brought home a milestone from Jordan? or 2500 bits of pot? perhaps a dozen sarcophagi to <s>use as planter </s> conduct extensive investigations on?

Is the BM right to take a share of the spoils? Will it return them? Thoughts please.:face-huh:

Here is the full press release from the BM's website:

It say's the pieces were donated by the Sudanese government and all come from an area which will be flooded soon.

I suppose this depends on the Antiquities law in Sudan. In Jordan everything is owned by the government, even if you have it on permanent loan. Apart form that, without an export license you aren't allowed to take anything out of the country, and unless you can claim to be engaged in the study of Roman Milestones - you wouldn't get it Wink

I don't know what the situation is with regards to Sudan, but it seems to me that exhibiting them in the BM and thereby highlighting both the affect of modern development in the region on cultural heritage there as well as the work of the Sudanese Antiquities Authority is a good thing?
