  glass floors
Posted by: Troll - 8th February 2005, 11:37 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (1)

If "preservation in situ" is to be nearly always preferred (laughs histerically as this nearly NEVER happens), why don`t developers put glass floors in? It has been used as an effective medium in other European countries and-turns out to be cheaper..anyone looked into this?[?]

  good news and bad
Posted by: Troll - 4th February 2005, 06:17 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (5)

English Heretics and county/City councils (around 35 so far) are involved in computer mapping areas due for "regeneration". Databases are seen as potentially enormous sources of information however, this is seen as a cost cutting exercise removing the developers need for evaluations. The idea is that developers will somehow be aware of their responsibilities in advance of development. My question is this, the idea will only work if the resultant database is accurate so how is it that the fieldwork in these areas are being undertaken as evaluations themselves with developers deciding how much information we can retrieve? Second, are English Heretics motivated from a heritage standpoint or, one of pleasing corporate developer lobbyists?}Smile

  ritual site in Perthshire

Sounds very much as though the development is destined to go ahead. The developers seem to think that they can simply make the appropriate noises to appease the public and will go ahead anyway. This is one example where the authorities should simply say no,regardless of compromise.Watch what happens to the Stonehenge landscape when satellite car parks and associated crap turns up in the area after "improvements" are made...Stand up and say NO Scotland!}Smile

Surely there are plenty of lawyers out there who fancy a challenge? Or even just an undergraduate dissertation subject? We seem to be attempting to change things on our own but are retarded by ridiculous legal garbage that won`t allow our curators to remove contractors who are not up to scratch. The IFA do nothing. Lets get some legal challenges on the go.Now where do we find a lawyer that is`nt a parasite.........:face-approve:

  quickie funding

Anyone know of any funding opportunities that I can apply for on the quick? Have to fly out to Cyprus and examine newly excavated skellies from early BA rock-cut chamber tombs-bit of a pricey exercise for a digger![?]

  Depository?
Posted by: Petethedig - 20th January 2005, 12:55 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (24)

Having been involved with quite a few conversations recently I thought I'd run this idea and see if it has any legs to run on?
Do you think there is a need for a mega-Warehouse facility in the central area of the UK that would act as a National Depository for archaeological finds? A kind of collection centre. Hermetically controlled with a full time staff of both conservationist and curators. It would be the size of one of the supermarket distribution centre's. It might contain a national centre for learning and study for the artefact's that it may contain. Everyone knows that a major problem facing British Archaeology is space to store finds. We have several other depositories in the UK, why not one for Archaeology? National lottery funding could be a way of developing such a site and certainly if it did happen it could free up more space regionally for our museums!Smile What do you think?

Evil to him who thinks evil.

  Archaeology in the US
Posted by: Ash - 18th January 2005, 02:13 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (4)

Hi,

I'm an archaeologist in the UK and am thinking of moving to the US, Colorado to be specific. Does anyone know how I could check out what type of qualifications/experience I need in order to be considered for work over there?

Would be grateful for any info!

Cheers

Ash
