What's wrong with them being rubbish pits?
Though there is one important tactic for survival most of us do not indulge in any more, making personal pacts with the supernatural. If burying the remains of your lunch and dedicating it to a local God is perceive as getting results then people will do it. The same with sticking with the same lottery numbers it's only got to work once to be valid.

it's difficult to take a duck god seriously ducks are some how not high on my list of imposing supernatural avatars. though I must admit to sacrificing bread to the ducks at the bottom of my garden. Watched one spend ten minutes shaking a dead frog into a floppy mass before swallowing it, never thought of ducks as serious carnivores before.
