'scuse me for askin', but how is "OFF-CTS" shorter than the English "offcuts"?.... [and I have to spend ages on my phone finding the "-", whereas "u" is just 2 presses on the 8 key....]

- yes I know according to the dictionary off-cut is hyphenated, but how often do you actually see it that way?

and while we are on the subject - i often get cv's with major spelling and gramatical mistakes which i instantly bin - what use are they to me or anybody else in this business?

I like looking deeper into documents (in word) to see if they have used a style template and how tidy their formatting skills are.................

I know that English Heritage use a standardised online application form for jobs that they advertise....I think this is a good idea in that precision for detail (i.e can you fill in a proforma application form) is as good a way of establishing whether someone is likely to be any good at filling in standardised proforma recording forms as any other method devised. It also stops that sort of 'showboating' that is ecouraged by these firms advertising 'CV preparation' services, which is often just an excuse for dressing up a very small lamb to look as if it might be a much larger sheep.....Not that I am suggesting BTW that EH have a policy that discriminates between sheep and any other 4 legged (or even 6 legged) herbivores......

Oxbridge stopped requiring Use of English AO in 1977/8, I'm afraid. My daughter's report once contained the suggestion that she should improve her 'proo-freading'. Really. Also had a primary school maths teacher telling the kids they could divide by 0: she knows not to do that now. There are plently of clever, literate young people about. They're just clever enough not to become archaeologists.

Oh come on! I can understand that fine. if you really can't understand that you need to go on a course ... or get yourself some children. I appreciate that the latter is a longer-term project.
