Digger letter and racism issue

I was curious to see that the 'carry on whingeing' letter refered to racism. Elsewhere we have mentioned the lack of other ethnic groups within archaeology. While there may be some racists within archaeology nearly all of my colleagues over the years would not be described as such. I don't think racism accounts for the whiteish bias, or am I wrong? Indeed, I bet there are several units would find it quite useful to have a better spread (Equal Op requirements and all).

Oh yes, the letter. I think that it was just a rejoinder, not the best written one, but there were valid points.

I suppose racisim could be in the form of calling me a "jocko" or calling me as tight as a ducks ... er bottom... as all jockos are mean. etc.

It could be North south, Lancashire Yorkshire. Glasgow - Edingburgh etc.

Most people I know in archaeology are not racisits, as it seems to attract people of er... a leftish leaning. Though it would be good to see where this came from... or the perceptions of others.

I would agree with Aching Knees that there is little overt racism in archaeology. However, at least one government culture minister (David Lammy) has been publicly quoted as saying (with regard to equal opportunity and equal representation for social, racial and cultural minorities), 'If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem'.

Which perhaps suggests we should be all considering why the professions of archaeology and museology are staffed by predominately 'white' staff, particularly in areas of the country where there is a greater than average racially and culturally diverse population.

One solution might be to encourage 'positive discrimination' for a fixed period of time that would allow a more diverse employment profile to be established, for role models to be created and perhaps a wider ranging social profile given to the archaeology/museology agenda. I certainly think that this is one area where the IFA RAO scheme could be used in a positive fashion and maybe all members should be required to show a commitment to Outreach schemes that aim to widen social and racial diversity in the profession.

Which could work quite easily in a smallish profession like archaeology that has (at least at the moment) no formal entry qualifications. It would also, if successful, raise our profile (and by inference our access to funding) considerably amongst the politician classes that like to encourage this kind of initiative.

Good points and ideas Kevin. We're our own worst enemies. Most outreach I see happening is talks to local arch/historical societies and the CBA regional groups. Audiences tend to be rather mature, middle class and overwhelmingly white. With yet another reminder of the horrors of racism on our streets we might think about how archaeology could engage the wider public. British archaeology should be a lesson in multi-culturalism across a long time-depth (Oh no, I'm gonna be accused of being a diffusionist now Wink)

Do the folks involved in the Young Arch Club think about/address these issues?

I have been involved in recruitment on an intermittent basis over a large number of years. As such, I have been aware of issues of race and gender balance, in particular that within my organisation we have never had a non-white archaeologist and never more than 18% female (note - that means that we once had 2 women in a team of 11!).

However, anyone recruiting staff can only choose from amongst the applicants they get. When we advertise we often get 100% white male applicants and never more than around 20% female. We have had very few non-white applicants, none of whom even came close to having the required qualifications, and all of them applied from outside the EU. In this situation, a 'positive discrimination' policy wouldn't help - you can't discriminate in favour of someone who doesn't apply.

All our jobs are advertised on BAJR and the JIS. I can't say that we have ever done any 'outreach' specifically in relation to recruiting.

I think that the solution has to start well before recruiting. In a predominantly (although not entirely) graduate profession we will never address this issue successfully until the universities can attract ethnic minority students to archaeology courses.

I agree with a lot of the above and was disturbed by the unquestioning inclusion of institional racism (?) in the letter. However, the issue of inclusiveness when it comes to archaeology and the presentation of the past is very current and important - and as David Lammy indicates one of national policy. Changing the demographic bias in the profession is another question, however, and I doubt there is any quick fix -clearly this is an area which would benefit from an in-depth examination - take note anyone looking for a PhD subject. Going back to presentation and the ways in which this affects society's perception of the past - perhaps our friends at Time Team and other high profile media outlets could do their bit to stimulate interest from a broader spectrum of society??

One point I was trying to make was that archaeology does not have a set of formal entry qualifications. It strikes me that if the spirit was willing and a little thought applied we could easily be attracting intelligent, but not necessarily university 'qualified' staff into archaeology.

1man1desk has identified many of the reasons why the demographic profile of archaeology and museology remains unchanging, advertising in a very few specialised locations and insisting on a pre-qualification in the very stereotype you might want to avoid, white, male, archaeology graduates.

Is it not possible that a very basic (but effective) form of job advertising, i.e adverts in job centres in areas of mixed population might not achieve a greater demographic diversity.

On Outreach projects can I recommend the Museum of London Shoreditch Park project. Here they have involved the very diverse population of an inner London borough in the archaeology existing beneath their local park. And also explained to a lot of local people that the big building taking up most of their canal side has something going on inside that they can get involved with, without any presupposed knowledge of the subject

Ok I am going to play devils advocate here- these are thoughts rather than set views of opinion- and I apologise for the length of the post [:I].

I grew up in an ethnically diverse part of the UK. Classes had a mix of kids whose parents came over in the 50s/60s. When it came to options for GCSE all but two opted out of history as they said it was not relevant to them as it was not covering their area of interest- ie where they came from. The two that kept up history to A-Level only wanted to do it as it was required for degree entry I think for law. How can we make people more interested in history they see as not relevant to them?

Archaeolgy having no formal entry qualification level is one of the issues that was recently raised in a debate I attended. This was felt to be making it difficult for archaeology to be taken seriously as a profession rather than a bunch of educated/interested amateurs. There is still to much of the 'oh you do this for a living' in archaeology as peolple do not percieve it as a career.

I would be intrigued to know what kind of jobs we could advertise in the job centre. I will suggest one argument- digging jobs- well doesn't this undermine the whole idea of a profession and make for the case that any one can dig a hole? As someone running commercial sites the pressure for getting the job done ASAP often does not allow the time for intensive training. It is already becoming a problem with graduates in archaeology as many have now come through a degree without going on a training dig as the uni's rarely run them these days.

I am not adverse to any one working in archaeology but my experiance sugests that there is a genuine lack of interest amongst immigrant/ethnic people in the history/archaeology of the UK. If archaeology is aiming to move forward and compete in the commercial world we need to lose the 'amateur' image and be taken seriously. If we are to get more of a diverse base in to archaeology I think we have to stimulate interest at an early age- in school. The issue of people clinging to their ethnic identity is one of the reasons surely that the immigration laws have now added a course in histoy and english as compulsory? Many kids I went to school with parents did not speak or spoke little English. This is perhaps the area to address?

PS No I am not dissing amateurs- I am all for the amateur circuit and help out as regularly as I can and even run training sessions.

David Lammy addressed this very point in a recent address. Yes the answer is to review the content of the history curriculum. Everyone has a history and has a right to knowledge and understanding of their past. This might require a wider ranging examination of our common past i.e empire, imperialism, religious diversity, than exists at present. The curriculum might also include study of the process of history and the methodology of historical and archaeological research, common themes to everyone's history. Likewise archaeology and museums should be broader in their research agendas, collection policies, exhibitions and publications. Institutions that are to any degree funded by the tax-payer have a particular responsibility in this area.

This was felt to be making it difficult for archaeology to be taken seriously as a profession rather than a bunch of educated/interested amateurs. There is still to much of the 'oh you do this for a living' in archaeology as peolple do not percieve it as a career.

If archaeology is to adopt formal entry qualifications, it should do so on the proviso that there is no bar to access to courses providing those qualifications from anyone in any sector of society. I was suggesting that at the moment there is no academic hindrance to a person from any racial or cultural background getting involved in archaeology because there are no formal entry qualifications. Not that qualifications are per se a bad thing.

I would be intrigued to know what kind of jobs we could advertise in the job centre. I will suggest one argument- digging jobs- well doesn't this undermine the whole idea of a profession and make for the case that any one can dig a hole? As someone running commercial sites the pressure for getting the job done ASAP often does not allow the time for intensive training. It is already becoming a problem with graduates in archaeology as many have now come through a degree without going on a training dig as the uni's rarely run them these days.

Last week there was a 3 week 'trainee' finds processing post, with full training provided, advertised on BAJR at ?245 per week. The advert suggested that the post might interest an archaeology student. It might also interest anyone of reasonable intelligence who lived close to the place of work and might be able to understand what they were being trained in.

Myself, like a lot of archaeologists still working, came into archaeology in the early 80's through an advert in the job centre. Some people say (even nowadays) that the best thing that ever happened to UK archaeology was the input of 'job-centre' archaeologists at that time.

Your point about archaeology graduates being unskilled in the finer arts of professional arcaheology has been discussed on this site for the last couple of months. I am pretty sure that most new graduates, in archaeology or any other subject, visit the job-centre at some time. And it's probably not to sneer at people looking for interesting work, that doesn't involve shelf-stacking, chicken processing plants or call centres.

I am not adverse to any one working in archaeology but my experiance sugests that there is a genuine lack of interest amongst immigrant/ethnic people in the history/archaeology of the UK. If archaeology is aiming to move forward and compete in the commercial world we need to lose the 'amateur' image and be taken seriously. If we are to get more of a diverse base in to archaeology I think we have to stimulate interest at an early age- in school. The issue of people clinging to their ethnic identity is one of the reasons surely that the immigration laws have now added a course in histoy and english as compulsory? Many kids I went to school with parents did not speak or spoke little English. This is perhaps the area to address?

I don't think that it is necessarily incompatible for a person to have pride in their cultural heritage, an interest in their racial ancestry and be employed as an archaeologist in the UK. Lots of UK born Egyptologists have an interest in the archaeological past of a nation some distance from their own cultural and racial background. I think the issue of widening the curriculum to include study of the process of history, the methodology of historical and archaeological research and common themes in history has been addressed.

What is interesting in this discussion is that it really doesn't take much thought to be able to identify many of the reasons why archaeology as a profession does not have as wide or varied a demographic make-up as society in general. I think the challenge is not just to identify the problem, but address the solution.

We should also be having this discussion in those area of UK archaeology which have a greater tradition of supporting the amateur side of archaeology, such as the CBA and perhaps the pages of Current Archaeology. I don't see that happening at the moment. David Lammy's analysis of the problem as 'If you're not involved in the answer, you're part of the problem' may equally apply to local archaeological groups, county societies and national bodies, as it does to professional archaeologists.
