I am not sure if the implication is that all the people shown in the excavation are metal detectorists. What seems to have happened here is a finder took an object to a museum. Surely though this is what the public has been doing since the beginning of public museums (in some areas of the country to a greater degree than others). This is the source of a lot of the older information in current SMRs (19th century to early 1960s in my area), and indeed this particular site seems to have been known to archaeology because of earlier accidental finds. Maybe there is somebody here who took part in these excavations who can tell us what is being learnt about the site from these small holes dug as the result of a detectorist digging down here.
I am a bit puzzled who this film is aimed at and why it for some reason carries the UKDFD logo and slogan, its not clear what the connection is. The patera is apparently not recorded in either the UKDF database, nor the PAS one.
