I am not sure if the implication is that all the people shown in the excavation are metal detectorists. What seems to have happened here is a finder took an object to a museum. Surely though this is what the public has been doing since the beginning of public museums (in some areas of the country to a greater degree than others). This is the source of a lot of the older information in current SMRs (19th century to early 1960s in my area), and indeed this particular site seems to have been known to archaeology because of earlier accidental finds. Maybe there is somebody here who took part in these excavations who can tell us what is being learnt about the site from these small holes dug as the result of a detectorist digging down here.
I am a bit puzzled who this film is aimed at and why it for some reason carries the UKDFD logo and slogan, its not clear what the connection is. The patera is apparently not recorded in either the UKDF database, nor the PAS one.

Have to say I liked the film⦠it put forward a good case about why finds should be recorded, why archaeologists need to know where an object comes from, and how working together is good for all.
It talked about policy, and cooperation⦠so pretty nice..
I think the implication was that the two finders were on the dig..
As to the patera not being recorded.. I would ask Dorset Museum about that. And the excavation strategy... I would ask Dorst Museum about that.

Working together is of course "good for all". The point I made is that as a result of a number of factors, members of the public have been taking things they've found to museums like this for many many years... i.e., many members of the public have realised this for themselves. My question was, who this film was aimed at.
I was not asking whether the patera was recorded, I assume if it was taken to the museum and is being conserved it would be, but I was puzzled why in the circumstances, the film presented here bore the UKDFD logo and slogan.
The main message (apart from the long NT-policy-on-detecting bit, the meaning of which in the context of the main story was entirely unclear to me) seemed to be that if detectorists show what they have taken out of a medium sized hole (is that what was hidden under the board?) to the archaeologists they can dig a slightly bigger one. But the viewer is told or shown nothing much about what that actually gives except a nice rectangular hole in the ground where we already know there was a site.

The second part of the film will be recorded this summer as the rest of the co-operation is doccumented. The main point of this film is to show co-operation and the little we have shown you now shows not just the glitz and glamour that some televisions programs show.

Hosty, if I was an inexperienced detectorist, looking in on sites such as this for the first time, what kind of an impression do you think the two above statements give?
I think I would be inlcined to look at Pauls and think, bugger you lot, if thats your opinion, why bother reporting anything!

If we are real honest Steve I think its got something do do with the name of the person who posted it. If it was made by a "responsible detectorist" you would have found there would have just been praise heaped upon it. Lets face it... anything that you or I post will be jumped upon by Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee no matter what it is a bout.
I think the archaeological community need to do something about the bad apple and its worm.

This minority interest subject has hijacked and seriously damaged other archaeological forums in the past. I expect that I am speaking for a great many silent lurkers when I ask you not to hijack BAJR too in order to pursue your vendettas. We are now seeing the topic spill over into other topics, other areas of the Forum. I am not suggesting that detecting should never be mentioned on BAJR, but let's face it, you are old foes and a lot of this is personal.
If we descend into the same old protracted slanging matches, many people will do what they have done before and vote with their feet. Mr. Connolly, take note.

So I take it you didnt think much about the film Tom.
This post began as an honest post with no malice intended and if you take a look at previous posts before a certain duo attended this board there was not much of a problem. I do agree that some subjects were a little hot under the collar but not as down right sarcastic and aggressive as they are now.
I also believe you will find that if Mr Hosty asked detectorist to back off on the subject we would leave this board without causing any fuss.

That's a reasonable reply Gary.
Note, however, that I studiously avoided any mention of the pros and cons of detectoring in general, or your film in particular. I shan't be drawn into your dispute. I have seen how little even the fairest-minded attempts at mediation achieve.
This is my last word on the matter.
