Some years ago (early 1980's) I was conned into working as a volunteer on a dig in France. The con said "unlimited free wine because the sponsor is a wine company - by the way, the site is in the Champagne region. All meals provided by a French chef".
The wine turned out to be a reddish paintstripper-like substance marked "produce of more than one EEC country", and the chef was an archaeologist who hadn't got a job as a supervisor so he took the cooking gig instead. His idea of a good meal was whole boiled horse tongue with raw grated celeriac. Yum!
