As I?m at home nowadays I discovered that I can cook,(nice middle astern food), or so my friends tell me, what about a mobile archaeological soup kitchen?
Think about it? No flasks ?. No cold sandwiches? beautiful archaeologist delivering hot soups. I can even hire a chopper to get to those far away sites and be a true field archaeologist? Look don?t laugh I can distribute sensors to locate you all out there in the fields. What say you?

I was a kick-arsch Chef forten years before digging, and i too looked at this. Ask yourself "Is it viable"....if you are doing food for a site of maybe 10 or 20 diggers, you have to sell an awful lot of soup to make sure you meet your overheads. Perhaps the way forwardwe be to broaden your target audience. If you have the ability to serve food to diggers outside, you also have the ability to serve food at football matches, race meetings etc. Have you priced up your insurance, food licences etc? What sort of wagon or trailer? Lot of work andoutlay for limitedreturn if you just sell oxo and maybe chicken soup to some half frozen diggers.

However, if they are digging in some very remote spot, with no shops for a very long way, you could have a monopoly and charge what you like.

Oh, the ways of your western capitalism!

Worked on a road-scheme job a few months back, and I'm pretty certain it was only the archaologists that were keeping the catering guy going!

Gizza job!!!!! ....please!!!!!

Don't even go there!
It sounds a great plan, but its doomed to fail!
As to going to football matches and stuff, forget it!
These pitches are sold for really big money and you dont want to get involved with the people who deal with it all, they are nasty!!

Well as long as we have to use this monetary exchange system, money is going to have to be spent to get anything done - be it acquiring a new trowel (rather than "borrowing" one out of a kameraden's bocks) or the setting up this food job. As the song goes "Money makes the world go around". It is a misfortune for us that we get paid less than public toilet cleaners.

Food is expensive at this places (football game)- the phrase I think is called "Mark up". There is money to be made for the shrewd person.

Catering business - 1man1desk - 19th December 2005

Some years ago (early 1980's) I was conned into working as a volunteer on a dig in France. The con said "unlimited free wine because the sponsor is a wine company - by the way, the site is in the Champagne region. All meals provided by a French chef".

The wine turned out to be a reddish paintstripper-like substance marked "produce of more than one EEC country", and the chef was an archaeologist who hadn't got a job as a supervisor so he took the cooking gig instead. His idea of a good meal was whole boiled horse tongue with raw grated celeriac. Yum!

No pun intended, but with a bit of horseradish sauce und mash - fantastic. But raw Celeriac? How Avant-garde.

Judy, in OZ you get these converted pick-ups doing the rounds of construction sites and industrial estates. Selling hot food, cold drinks, etc. Seems to be a rather viable and profitable business over there.

Don't do it!
Its a recipe for failure!
