IfA declare rate minimas for next April |

Each November, IfA Council considers what, if any, increase should be applied to its minimum recommended salaries from April the following year, advised in recent years by its working party on remuneration.
The working party represents a diverse range of viewpoints and interests and, as such, is unable to make recommendations to Council but rather present a series of options to inform Councilâs deliberations.
Council met on 7 November and decided that IfA recommended minimum salaries should increase above inflation from 1 April 2014. The new rates are:
PIfA £17,094
AIfA £19,911
MIfA £25,738
You will be glad to hear that the BAJR Grade rates are broadly similar. ( give or take a tenner here or there) though the AIfA ( G4) rate for a supervisor is now just over £20k

[h=5]Listen up people... Raksha grabs this by the danglers and gives a twist. - thanks to Doug for the initial thoughts.
Hands up any white middle class archaeologists -- hmmm thought so.
http://digventures.com/2013/11/11/raksha...diversity/[/h]
However... it goes beyond and looks at what we do for community? Have we just become a tickbox society?
Are we diverse? or is archaeology designed specifically to exclude... by merit of how much a degree costs and when projects take place during the week.?
ps... the debate is also happening on BAJR facebook as well:

Society for Church Archaeology - Grant Offer |

Annual Research Grant
The Society for Church Archaeology invites applicants for its annual research grant. The amount should not exceed £1,000, and application is open to members of the Society proposing a project involving fieldwork and/or research in any area of church archaeology, or related topics.
The grant will cover research expenses, travel related to research, fieldwork, or the sundries of fieldwork. The Society is pleased to accept applications for pilot project funding to help attract larger grants, or for a discrete project (with its own aims, objectives and outputs) within the framework of a larger project. We welcome applications from academics, professionals, amateurs and particularly from early career scholars and postgraduate students (although we will not cover the costs of a course of study.) The research should be original and we require the successful applicant to submit a short note to our journal, Church Archaeology, within six months of completion of the Project.
How to Apply
Please use the application form provided below and email that document to Dr Kristján Ahronson at k.ahronson@bangor.ac.uk by November 15th; paper applications cannot unfortunately be considered, unless by prior arrangement. Each referee should email his or her report to the same address. Decisions are assessed by the Research Grants panel (David Stocker, David Baker, and Kristjan Ahronson), and announced in January of the following year.

Jobs in British Archaeology 2012-13 |

Hey everyone. Ran the numbers for the 2012-13 Jobs in British Archaeology article i.e. measuring pay based off of job postings. It might be a little while before it gets published and I figure some people might find the information interesting before it goes to out of date. Any feedback on the draft would be greatly appreciated. Any questions ask away.

Development next to the Prittlewell burial site |

Just read a slightly odd article in a local paper saying that a development is taking place 'yards' away from the Prittlewell burial site, and that the only archaeological work that has been done (by Wessex) is three augur holes, which apparently is enough to say there's nothing there. While I suspect this is probably just a local journo getting hold of the wrong end of the stick, does anyone have any more info on this? Is it true?

This what I want for Christmas http://patlah.net/etm/etm-07/c-x%20agreg..._paset.htm
Translate winch plough into Russian and pop it into utube. Obviously this is what traction ploughing used to be all about, but I imagine that it is minimum compaction on soils and therefore might stop the nessecity for sub soiling. Maybe this should be the only type of ploughing allowed on scheduled sites. Also I imagine that it Needs a lot less fuel and is more sustainable. Yes I know it looks like they are using it on What looks like podzols or Loess, but a few more horses in the engine and we presumably have traditional plough designs suited to Britain. The original traction engines were only putting out 5 or 6 horses which is what I have in my lawn mower. I predict a revolution. This is The future, might even change the landscape across the world. We might even see ridge and furrow return across the midlands....

The next question: recording |

What makes the perfect context sheet/section drawing? If you're doing all the post-ex stuff, what sort of information do you actually want? Because I'm a sad git I've been trying to design my own record sheets, but being inexperienced have no idea what information is actually needed from the digger to enable a good record of the site. So, given a blank slate, what would you like to see from the bod with the trowel in their hand?
