Why, o why does the public still think we are taxpayer funded, after almost 30 years of right wing governments? Does the Mail or Sun have a long running campaign against "Spongeing Heritage Workers" or something?

Hi all,Dunno about how the public perceive us, but when of ones lecturerers(how do I stop spelling that?), who's actively involved in field archaeology, refers to excavators as "Trowel Monkeys"...well.. I'm working for this person next summer, or at least I was going to.. I wonder which step of the evolutionary ladder supervisors occupy...? apes? perhaps I can break her aerial off and twist her windscreen wipers...

On open days to sites, after machining off topsoil a common question is :
3:face-thinks: How do you know where to dig?
and after watching for hours stating that 'I wouldn't the patience to do that'!
39) My all time fav 'Found any gold yet?'
40) So you get paid for doing this?
41) Why are you taking xxxx months when Time Team do it in 2 days?

It was just that the thought of
working for someone who thought that the job he was offering me was - by implication - rubbish that got my back up. I was also told during the interview that I would be 'expected' to work 'some' weekends unpaid!
I am still an archaeologist so I suppose I have become hardened to that sort of attitude from the people who run units.
My current boss is a very honourable exception

leg11aug-greetings and salutations.
Had to put my pennysworth in here....what would they know? some there can`t even spell trowel. Not only that, said establishments reputation for care of staff and undergrads has been in question many times. Explain gently that someone needs to learn some manners...
Back to the thread...colleague of mine had an elderly lady start an argument with him through the fence and wished that he would "fall down the hole". archaeology can be a strange catalyst for members of the public.....

Builder-type today "found anything thats worth anything?" I then explain the priceless value of investigating (big midlands city) history and the social/cultural identity it brings.
"wots the f***in point if your not making money then?" offers Plato.
I then go out of my way to explain the concepts again but in Thomas the Tank Engine terminology.
"Oh I see, it`s worth f**k all but it`s priceless" grasps mister man.
"precisely!" I offer in relief that understanding is reached.

have got great digger driver on site, who seems to be a magnet for skellies, keeps naming sites and then adds "I wuz one who found that". Apparently he's also a magnet for unexploded bombs troll, have yet to ask him if he was on a ceratin site...
++ i spend my days rummaging around in dead people ++
