Introduction to Human Osteology

A one-day course suitable for those working in outdoor occupations, the rescue services, field archaeology and museums.
Thursday 15th September 2011 9.30-4.30

Course content

Introduction to the human skeleton
• handle human bones
• lay out a complete skeleton
• learn to identify the different types of bones

Comparative osteology
• handle animal bones such as sheep and dogs
• learn to distinguish between human and animal remains

Self assessment
• review your knowledge at the start and end of the day
• gain confidence in dealing with skeletal material
• eliminate uncertainty when bones are found
Course venue

The course will be held at Northgate House, the University of Sheffield's Archaeology Department on West Street. Northgate House is a five minute tram ride from Sheffield station and a five minute walk from the city centre.

The course will be run by trained osteologists wit a wide range of experience in the field, in the laboratory and in the classroom.

There will be an hours break for lunch. Tea/coffee will be provided but lunch is not included in the price of the course. There is a wide choice of sandwich bars, pubs and restaurants less than two minutes walk from the department.
