Web Award Nominations
#1
After the roaring success of last the Web Award

What I want now is 4 nominations for a really good Online SMR/HER... one that gets you the info quickly, slickly, that can be used by pro's and amateurs.. has time for kids and also has a look of dynamism - ie.. is not just the data from the SMR/HER dumped onto a screen by a tech who does not understand the end user

SO my First one is this

: Perth and Kinross

remember this is just about the Online SMR /HER

I'm biased, but I'd have to go for Somerset - http://webapp1.somerset.gov.uk/her/sop.asp?flash=true

It's run by a small team of archaeologists headed up by Chris Webster. The map, though small, can be filtered to display archaeological sites/monuments/historic landscapes over OS data, aerial photos from the 1940's, and aerial photos from 2001.
Though getting on a bit in web terms, it remains an excercise in how it should be done.

I'd like to nominate the Norfolk Heritage Explorer

http://www.heritage.norfolk.gov.uk/NHEhome.html

- the online version of the Norfolk HER with additional teaching resources and much more for anyone interested in the area. I've found it great to place any site in the area within its wider context and to find local regional/comparisons.

Looks like two contenders so far... any Scottish or Welsh??

How about this nifty system from WoSAS (west of scotland archaeology service)
http://gis.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/wosas/Default.aspx

they cover a large area and this is the only county that has this implemented. actually quite fun Smile

for full WoSAS.. look here

I'd like to nominate Tyne and Wear HER (Sitelines):

A well presented site, complete with nifty themed sections (making it easy to navigate for the kids / lay-person).

Ah... now this is one I have cited before as having some real useful resources... taking the HER and making it relevant... the teaching resources are top!

Looks like another for the list

Amen to that,

But in the mean time a collective hug to all that have created the wonderful resources being nominated here. Even though some of these are not in an area applicable to me, they are amazing to investigate and I must urge anyone in the profession, whether they use HERs or not, to have a look at all these examples just to see what is being done and how.

I know of many SMRs/HERs who woul love to go online but don't have the staffing or resources to get themselves to that point. So congratulations to everyone who has managed to do so and please support your local SMRs/HERs in finding ways to get out there more.

Need one or two more...

My new Partnership with the technological Wizard Steve White (Online Archaeology) could offer a very very sexy service to the NonOnline SMRs/HERs we have the technology, that is so out there it looks easy... Smile

anyway... back to the thread
