All this guessing which unit people are actually talking about is a real hoot. A certain unit north of the border or a certain unit in the Midlands. :face-huh: We need to have some form of on line charades going i think ....


Sad to hear about Lindsey Archaeological Services. I was employed by them, for a short while, 2 years back and worked with a good bunch of people there.

This deppression has hit a lot of units (some harder than others), but I still think that as a profession we should resist giving into despair and try to come out of it stronger-as Granny Weatherwax would say "I aintent dead yet". Though in what shape archaeology will be in once things turn around is anybodies guess.
I like to think that the last part of Tennyson's 'Ulysses' sums it up:

Depends whether you mean individual archaeologists or units. These big projects (e.g. large road schemes) can provide a lot of archaeological work over a period of several months. Some of them may have well over 100 archaeologists on site. However, while lots of individuals may get jobs, smaller regional units often don't get much chance of winning the work from the large national units.

As you say, they will only help people who either live within reach of the projects or are willing/able to move temporarily.

It seems then that at least 'someone' has confidence that there is still archaeology in Lincoln...

always good to hear of companies surviving. Shouldn't we be asking the question of what happens to the post-excavation and reports of units that have collapsed????

Financially, I guess the collapse of the company suggests no further money is available for post-ex

Intellectually, I guess that with all the best will in the world, the collapse of the company suggests no further money is available for post-ex and who will work for nothing.

We don't have a regualatory system in the UK where archaeologists can be forced to account for personal and/or corporate backlogs. (Discuss!!)

A bit of both I suppose. For one thing, yes they aren't going to be much use for smaller organisations or individuals unless by some miracle they can get involved in a large project of that type.

Secondly, it is going to be very regional and so it is going to favour the archaeologists of some areas more than others. I can't see the government deciding they need a new airport anywhere near where I am, for example (thank God!).
