I know that English Heritage use a standardised online application form for jobs that they advertise....I think this is a good idea in that precision for detail (i.e can you fill in a proforma application form) is as good a way of establishing whether someone is likely to be any good at filling in standardised proforma recording forms as any other method devised. It also stops that sort of 'showboating' that is ecouraged by these firms advertising 'CV preparation' services, which is often just an excuse for dressing up a very small lamb to look as if it might be a much larger sheep.....Not that I am suggesting BTW that EH have a policy that discriminates between sheep and any other 4 legged (or even 6 legged) herbivores......
