Trouble is that Capcha would not work i this case as he was a real person... Yup... this is a new one!! A eral person signs up for a board, they look genuine, the name is sensible and the email address valid.. no russian or dodgy mail.com addys... once they are registered they manually go through each member... he joined and was verified .. and I even saw them browsing the forum... sadly it was 3/4 of an hour before I realised what he was... when he started to send the first of his mails... This is new territory .. and is very very very difficult to deal with... ie... how can I tell if you are a digger in Derbyshire or a spammer in Nigeria? because many people use Yahoo and Hotmail, it is not even that useful to use an ip trace on them... unless I spend a lot of time in a full trace ... and frankly spending a day searching out the details of each new member kind of defeats the purpose .. All I can do now... and I once again apologise for this breach - though may I suggest people get a spam filter installed! ---
I am now on the 2nd highest level of security on the site... Every new memmber must register, an email is sent to me, I then check the member, email them back.. and if I am happy with the reply (again not foolproof) I will allow them access to post... which will then allow them to see each of us - The final level, which would exclude all but signed up members seems to be of little point.. as they (the spammer) would still register anyway to get access.
This is bloody annoying, and very unexpected (I am ready to beat the bots! but not humans bots!)
I guess this new generation of spammer could do it to anything, from Britarch to any emal or webbased forum... something to watch out for in the future I fear.
Another day another WSI?
