NO NO NO!
The problem isn't a lack of skilled people, its a lack of jobs for skilled people. Using 'interns' will not give the intern anything other than a few cv points. If Kevin's right on the figures, you'd be better off on the dole, volunteering on the sly, or just looking for work in a decent sector.
Pay a decent wage for a decent skilled worker.
If there is commercial work out there then units should bid for it based on using professional staff, this would take us back to units using volunteer staff to do sites for less money, and with less quality, whilst other units bid based on 100% waged, its not going to help the site staff one iota. Calling it work experience was always a shabby excuse. And lets face it, you used to be able to get an internship with a unit fresh out of school with no work experience and get paid the BAJR minumum, it was called being a site assistantDr Wardle, my heart bleeds for you.
I'm sorry for those graduating this year, but you're better off not starting in archaeology!!
