Your experience highlights one of the aspects of archaeology that is a good or bad thing depending on your point of view. There are a lot of people out there who are willing to volunteer to do stuff for the love of it, however, at the same time they can often be putting people out of a job.
Unfortunately, this is a subject that hovers like a vulture around all the old gripes about pay and conditions in archaeology. No-one is goin to fork out good money, when they can get someone to do it for nothing.
