Would question the term gun trail until I had seen it. Generally speaking, artillery of the 17th Century was painted black unless it was for ceremonial purposes and then, not particularly artistically. Would be worth the enquirer approaching the Sealed Knot and in particular-the artillery garden. On the leaded window front-check out the excavation reports for Basing House Hants (my regiments ancestral home).....Also-check out the Royal armories in Leeds/London.

Well, not knowing anything about the find, I am intrigued to know if one has been found with paint on it, and, if so, what colour(s) the paint was.
WRT the Sealed Knot, the chap, who asked me, is an active member so I guess he should have access to that knowledge.
I shall check out the Basing House reports. It is possible that this find is not generally in the public domain yet, as the enquirer seemed to think that it was a very recent find undertaken by a unit from Liverpool and I can find nothing about it on the net.
Cheers,

Hey, you guys are in severe danger of having to go and aplogise in person to the inhabitants of that city!
Would you really like to have something in common with Boris Johnston?
Today, Bradford. Tomorrow, well, Bradford probably.

Ok, point taken. Liverpool, I am profoundly sorry for suggesting that your inhabitants are in any way dodgy, theivin, parasitic, vocally challenged or iffy in any way.Not. A desired bit of common ground wiv Boris (bless im) would be- to be the one who writes his death certificate.....

How on earth did a thread on artillery come to this? On a "sort of" related point-how many of you can, hand on heart, tell the difference between prehistoric flint and say-17th Century gun flint?[?]
