One Minima to Rule them All - kevin wooldridge - 7th March 2016

A good trade union branch should make sure that it integrates its activities and organisation into every aspect of the companies business.....withdrawal of labour remains the ultimate sanction, but my experience as secretary to a union branch of 200 plus members, is that the day to day routine, negotiation and a spirit of co-operation are what wins the greatest benefits to union members. In archaeology that begins with health and safety....a properly organized H&S committee, H&S reps and a workplace H&S structure can become the springboard for many other union related activities.....

One Minima to Rule them All - Crocodile - 7th March 2016

The benefits of unions seem obvious to me.

Strikes inconvenience people, how often do they get the results that the union wants?

One Minima to Rule them All - P Prentice - 7th March 2016

i dont think it is a question of how often the union gets what it wants, i think it is more to do with employers knowing that their workers are prepared to do it if they are not treated fairly

One Minima to Rule them All - Crocodile - 7th March 2016

Are there any examples that anyone knows of, where unions have been able to organise a nationwide industrial dispute involving a range of independent companies of different sizes?

One Minima to Rule them All - BAJR - 8th March 2016

Well the figures are in from the BAJR review ( G2 level posts only just now)

The 2013/14 posts hovered around £16,339.00 ( which was the minima ) with over half the posts on this level

in 2014/15 the G2 posts came in at 1/3 on the minima...£17094 and another 1/3 on the next step up ( from £17100-17300)

in 2015/16 the G2 posts are now mainly in the middle ground of rates... with the largest percentage on c. £17,500-17,575 with just under half the posts on this and the next level down to the minima ( 17299) accounting for just a quarter However there was a significant spike at the 18k plus level, where just under a quarter of jobs were advertised.

So in terms of the digging rate moving forward. Yes it is...

The Percentage increase has increased in the last year and will increase again.

The road map for better wages is a red herring. the market force is about supply - demand and respect for skill. You get what you pay for... and companies are paying more, to get people. the best will stay and get paid more... as it will require better incentives to get them

So - has the experiment worked? Too early to tell. however... the cluster around the minima that happened in the past has halted... and the rates rise... If the G2 level rates rise... then the other grades must... however. it is obvious from a reading of the adverts that the upper level positions are static ... the managerial is not keeping pace. which is further concertinaing the pay range.. so from Digger to Director the pay band differences are narrowing - Time to look at the PO and above...

Why is a roadmap a red herring?

A map showing where we are, where we want to be, that can can inform us how fast we are travelling, if we are going forward in the right direction, how long it is going to take us to get there. Not a good idea?

One Minima to Rule them All - BAJR - 8th March 2016

Ok.... Just for you...

We are Here ... we want to go there...

Wink

Define Here... and Define There please.

If it is the simple PIfA current and PIfA desired equation...

Considering that the Current coming rate is : £17,646 and the Desired is £19,853 ( which requires a 12.5% increase) You have to consider what the next say 5 years increase of 2% would make.

After 5 years
it would be 19482.60 However the same rate applied to the Desired would result in £21919.31 ( Still 12.5% more)

So If you raised rates by 3% then after 5 years the rate would be £20456.53 which is a 7.5% difference to get to the £21919.31

Which is admittedly getting there... But would require 3% rises for about 15 years.. IF ... IF the raises each year were going to remain static at 2% for the same period

So... A road map works only in highlighting what we already know... but also don't know... Too many ifs buts and maybes. And of course because of the bell curve of pay.. where the worst off are actually the supervisors and POS but now PM posts are being hit.

So really... For me a road map is a pointless exercise in that it just says, that we want to see increases over the average ( related to someone else) ~

So For your Road Map...
We are at £17,646 But we want to be £19,853

Do you have any examples that I can get my head around for what you want?

One Minima to Rule them All - P Prentice - 8th March 2016

i dont think there has ever been a better time to demand 12%

One Minima to Rule them All - BAJR - 8th March 2016

Indeed - But who will this demand go to? And what if only half the companies agree to it?

One Minima to Rule them All - Crocodile - 8th March 2016

That sort of thing really. Gives people an idea of what can realistcally be achieved and the time period it would take. Do you not think it's useful information for people to know. I mean they coukd sit and work it out.

I don't particularly want anything from anybody in terms of answers, if that is what you mean, I'm asking questions so that people with better knowledge than me may have something informative to tell. If they don't it doesn't matter.

Do you really want me to define here and there?
