I remember from experience that tax is higher in the ROI than in UK and emergency tax is exceedingly relatively higher. It aslo takes a long long long time to get the tax back.

Trowelhead. Excellent reply with good advice!

yes but if you claim your tax back using your p21 and sending it to the inland revenue with your tax return they calculate the difference and you get the extra back - but will take until the next financial year. Problem also arises as financial year in ROI is Jan to Dec

fortunately -given the money on offer - it is like a nice bit of money in the bank.. for later... with enough now as if you were getting paid normally.

Lucy... you seem to have a real handle on the whole scheme... could you possibly write down or collect the links so people know exactly what to do/expect... I can then ensure personally that ACS get this and give the info to all non RoI staff.

Ah but what archaeology! (I assume its for some section of the M3 that needs doing double quick - as has been the case on various section of other road schemes)
Check out http://www.m3motorway.ie
or for my favourite site on the M3 http://www.m3motorway.ie/Archaeology/Section2/Roestown2
Proper archaeology that you lot dream about.

Ah but what archaeology!

Now why is it that the Irish dig out all of their ditches and we in the UK typically dig about 10%?
Would any curators care to justify the UK position (other than it's what we've always done, or what the developers are used to accepting)?
Is there anyone from Ireland out there willing to testify to the greater significance of results from fully understood ditch sequences?

I am wondering if anyone who works on this contract might be willing to keep a personal diary of how the project unfolds, how difficult it was to register for work, getting a bank account, getting accomodation, the good times on site, not so good times etc etc.

....With the intention of sharing it with us all once the contract is completed. I am thinking this may become a useful BAJR-type guide to the process of obtaining work abroad (especially as one hears such varied reports of the digging scene in Ireland). I am sure David could sort out some way where all names are changed to protect the innocent, "I made my excuses and left"- type disclosures.

I personally would also be interested in whether such a short-notice/short contract job attracts experienced or less experienced candidates and whether its the money or the craic that's the main attraction.

Ok for some reason Ireland has a bad reputation - but as I'm sure the case is in England - with so many archaeology companies in existence there are some good, some very bad and the rest are middling! I am not naming names! There are a few very big companies which get all the large contracts - most of whom are very good but the pay varies! The pay in Ireland is more but the downside of this is that you are expected to organise and pay for your own transport and accommodation unless they are really stuck. Some companies pay subsistence but the rate varies from company to company and some only pay it in certain circumstances. Some companies use it as a way to pay less taxable pay and more untaxed - but you don't get subsistence for holidays or sick days and it can affect the amount you get if you go on the dole in ROI (not applicable here though). Most companies only bother giving out contracts if they have a big project on and they want to ensure they keep their staff - and they are usually six month renewable contracts or project specific. I've only ever had two contracts in my life both with the same company. Most companies give holidays based on number of days worked, only workers who have worked with them for about a year are entitled to sick pay and only permanent staff usually get offered pensions. There is no union - a few years ago some people tried to organise a branch of SIPTU but I don't know if it ever got off the ground as most people didn't join!
The Irish Revenue website is http://www.revenue.ie/ but it's as clear as mud! You are better off phoning your local revenue office for help!
Getting a PSRI/PPS number and bank account isn't too hard but you have to do it in person with a letter from your employer and landlord. You can get a non-residents back account so you don't have to pay government duty on your bank account and if you get a particular sort of bank account and have over a certain amount in it you only have to pay bank duties once a year (I have a bank of Ireland account and this is set at 500 Euro balance I think). you have to go to the welfare office for you PPS card http://www.welfare.ie/topics/ppsn/apply.html Accomodation wise http://www.daft.ie has the biggest selection of rental properties - the closer to Dublin the more expensive! The UK inland revenue website is also gobbldy gook - I found this http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/nonresidents/iwtclaim-relief-from-uk-tax-under-a-double-taxation.shtml which is related but is for non nationals living in the UK - but it's about the double taxation treaty. there's a helpline http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/contactus/helplines.htm#37 national insurance/PSRI is also reciprocal but you can't claim it back until you claim your state pension!

Thanks Lucy. I can't imagine anyone who goes into this project after reading your helpful advice can claim that they haven't been warned of some of the pitfalls and complexities behind working in Ireland.

Is there a reason Lucy that you didn't mention the SafePass. Is it possible to get one within a few hours of arriving in Ireland so as to be able to start earning as soon as possible?

You have to do the one day course - I think ACS are subsidizing it??? You can look up a list of people that take the course at http://www.fas.ie but if enough people need doing at the same time I'm sure ACS would have organised a course. The Northern Ireland version CSR http://www.cefni.co.uk/about_us/construction_skills_register/ is technically equivalent but some contractors wont accept it (I don't know what you call the English/Scottish version) - I think that you can challenge it though if they wont accept it as it is supposed ot be valid for the Euro zone
