Sorry gumbo, I wasn't have a go at you with the references to soul searching or navel gazing (or any bit!) which I meant specifically to the agency threads. Perhaps I should have said I don't understand why the agency concept seems so revolutionary and sparked so much debate and rhetorical questioning, when it is just an everyday part of commercial life outside archaeology.

On the general subject of employment agencies, there was a very interesting piece in the court reports of yesterdays Times.
A punter working through an agency took the firm he was outsourced to to court for unfair dismissal, even though he had been paid and contracted to the agency. Much to every ones suprise he won (and won again in appeal), when the tribunal decided that an implied contract of employment can exist between an agency worker and the organisation that he carries out the work for irrespective of who holds his contract and pays his wages.
I will try and scan this piece and place on my blog, but am in central Norway at present and lack the hardware to effect the copy.

There has been some very interesting debate about recruitment in archaeology and I would like to thank everyone for taking part.
But, I must agree that recruitment agencies are a common feature in all industries. How often have you come across someone who has said that archaeology is a nice hobbey to have but you can't really call it work? If I had a pound..........
My point is WE ARE IN A SERIOUS PROFESSION AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. I for one have worked too hard to get where I am today to be treated like an imbecile (or a freak I find) because I enjoy digging up dead things - it may be the persona I put across, I don't know.
Archpeople brings with them this professional attitude - we are in business - we are a business - why should it be seen otherwise? Competition is commonplace in business - again, why should archaeology not be seen as a business because it is archaeology?
I have been so surprised by some of the responses of people on this forum in that I have had so many positive responses from people (thank you for emailing me them) and yet, some of the same people have become negative because Archpeople is new, is different and offers archaeologists something that they have not had before.

I can't understand why you are surprised at people's scepticism. Given the **** employment conditions so rife in our profession, that scepticism is neither misplaced or unhealthy and just because you sound sincere its not going to magically pass you by...
Your wages sound ok in comparison with unit rates, your guarantee of continuous work sounds good, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Hey after XX years of commerical archaeology, crap wages and conditions, why not see if an agency can solve things? If anything else it will provide continutity of employment for staff, rather than the usual 3 month contracts.....

If they can deliver on their promises, I wish them luck!
My point is only that scepticism is usually justified in archaeology... and they shouldn't be surprised that people require a bit mor reassurance than when dealing with the equivalent type of agency in secretarial work or some such.

After the cut and thrust of pushing forward the potential of a Dignity wage starting point by April 2007 - I am in a position to agree that you never underestimate the new (BAJR was once the angry young man)
Natalie should however temper her posts with slightly less patronising tones, and although I wish her business well, I have yet to have one piece of hard fact to lay against Archpeople- only business speak rhetoric.
Some of our skeptic natures come from years of work in archaeology.
If archpeople have something real to offer, ( I look forward with hope to the website working as promised) then they should just get on and do it. If it works....... great. People can make there own minds up, and as there will be no financial commitment, what can you lose.?
And don't worry -
It is not a choice between BAJR and Archpeople it never will be - BAJR offers a very different service.Another day another WSI?
