Claiming tax back on stuff
#1
Having moved jobs relatively recently for the first time I find myself filling out a P87 to claim tax relief from HMRC as my employer doesn't pay the recommended mileage allowance. Reading through the advice on the website made me question what else I could claim for.

Obviously there are memberships and such but have any employees ever claimed for work clothes etc?

https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employ...-and-tools

Having not known about this I obviously haven’t kept all my receipts, but I would argue archaeologists should be able to claim a lump sum like other construction workers, but of course ‘archaeologist’ isn’t a listed occupation and I am not sure who you would contact to query this.

Cheers.

I'm possibly the last person to take advice about tax from Rolleyes but my understanding is that the work clothes thing is fairly straightforward and receipts are not necessary. I seem to remember something about claiming for the extra costs incurred for washing work clothes too.

I may have just dreamed that last one though :I

What would be really handy is a BAJR guide on this sort of thing if it doesn't exist already :face-huh:

Cheers RitualCoconut. It does seem pretty straightforward actually.

I called 0300 200 3300. I waited on hold for ages, explained the situation and was asked to confirm if I had to buy any specialist tools, equipment of clothing for my job. I explained that I had my personal toolbox with trowels etc and bought work trousers, knee pads etc and as a result they have added another £60 of tax relief to my tax code. I can also claim this back for the last three years. Wish I’d known earlier. Bit more cash for what I have been doing anyway.

I think you can claim the cost of laundry if you have to wash your work clothes separately from your normal laundry. I would suggest you also check out the allowance that can be claimed for costs of travel to a temporary workplace (dependent upon where your employer claims you are 'located' for your employment)......

It depends Kevin. I tried to claim this some years ago and they turned me down. But I was told by Tax person subsequently that the view taken varies from Tax Office to Tax Office. I guess it's always worth claiming but be aware that experiences vary.
