IfA Minima Debate - THE RESULT
#51
Hi,

Being a field archaeologist at one of the larger nationwide companies and NOT being a member of the IFA I look at the situation and am somewhat dismayed. The minima is supported but will no longer be a pre-requisite to becoming an RO? It seems to me the IFA have done niether one thing or the other but placed themselves firmly on the fence. As for the idea that not paying the minima will be frowned upon - what are they going to do about it?

Also, as for the minima failing to achieve higher pay what do the IFA expect? They don't actually enforce it! They don't punish any unit for any failings. Having been on the circuit we all hear the horror stories of rubbish companies yet they are all RO's.

I would also like to have a list of companies who lobbyed for the abolition of the minima. I know of one large company who did but it would be nice to be aware of those companies who feel paying diggers circa £16,000 per year is a bit of a strain.

I know I am being dim but exactly what salary minima are the ifa saying a digger should be paid, adjusted for inflation and all that?

IfA salary recommendations: decisions of IfA Council, 30/01/2013

The recommended minimum salaries for 2013‐14 are increased to

  • PIfA‐level competence/responsibility: £16,327 ( BAJR Grade 2 - £16,339.10 )

  • AIfA‐level competence/responsibility: £19,017 ( BAJR Grade 4 - £19,031.00 )

  • MIfA‐level competence/responsibility: £24,583 ( BAJR Grade 5/6 £24,159.43 )

The recommended starting salaries for 2013‐14 are increased to

  • PIfA‐level competence/responsibility: £19,853 ‐ £20,926
  • AIfA‐level competence/responsibility: £29,123 – 31,561
  • MIfA‐level competence/responsibility: £36,552 ‐ £40,276
Surely now that the IfA are going to audit RAO as to their ability to pay enhanced salaries, it is time to scrap the salary minima and 'enforce' the higher recommended starting salary figures instead!!
With peace and consolation hath dismist, And calm of mind all passion spent...

This is a question - IS it possible for the IfA to release, in the name of openness the companies that lobbied for this situation? :face-huh:

"If asked, any of us who have been in the business for a few years could produce a list of companies and consultants (mostly ROs) who we regard as sub standard. ........"

Sad!

With the advent of documentation appearing on county planning websites there's plenty of evidence of poor work freely available online and in the public domain - the worst report we've ever seen was downloaded recently from one such site, people were in tears after reading it... :face-thinks:

PIFA is an experienced digger responsible for their own work but not in charge of others. (short version)

Is there somewhere where I can find this definition of digger. I have not heard any digger describe themselves as a pifa level digger.
