Hi Doug, interesting stuff. Can I ask you to clarify what you mean by Project Manager? Good news to see the number of job adverts increasing but shame to see how low wages remain. Bah we really should form some sort of professional body or institute to organise better pay and conditions...

In this case it is commercial archaeology only not SMR/CRM e.g. English Heritage, Council Archaeologists, etc. or third sector/charity e.g. CBA, Archaeology Scotland etc.

It is actually Project Manager + so it can include someone like head of commercial unit's timbuktoo office. Basically, your top positions in commercial archaeology, your senior positions. Most of them rarely get out into the field. Of course there is variation between companies. Smaller ones tend to have a do everything sort of set up.

Thanks Doug that clears things up. I was trying to figure out if I was being underpaid or not... I have 'senior' in my job title but I still get rained on a lot and my clothes are filthy, so maybe not Wink

I wonder Doug if your survey would be more 'useful' to archaeologists in general if instead of classifying the jobs by title you classified it by salary band. So for example ?12-15000, ?15001-18000, ?18001-21000 etc etc.

I suspect this would show that job titles in UK archaeology are largely irrelevant, unless it can be demonstrated that one job title falls wholly within a limited salary band...it might however serve to demonstrate that there is regional variation in pay rates.

I have always been of the belief that many archaeologists are willing victims of hyperbole when it comes to job titles.....

'We are going to promote you to Senior Chief Research Archaeological Project Officer. There's no increase in salary but its a nifty job title'

'Yeah cool. Much better than being Assistant Senior Chief Research Archaeological Project Officer (even if there is no increase in salary). Guess I will be able to attend the annual conference of Senior Chief Research Archaeological Project Officers now'

'Well as long as you don't expect us to pay or give you time off'
