Disposing of archived artefacts
#11
Im with troll on this one - schools are the way to go! My mum and sister are both teachers and the kids love the unstrat pottery and tile thats been collected off spoil heaps. The fact that they get to handle material hundreds or thousands of years old is majical for them and it makes a dam fine addition to the average nature table! And just because its rubbish from an acedemic point of view doesnt mean people arent interested. They could even consider selling it in the gift shop - it worked for the berlin wall and the old cardiff arms park.

Trowelfodder

It worked for Wheeler at Maiden Castle, when he sold off loads of hoarded slingstones found in pits behind the ramparts - the fact that inexhaustable supplies of such stones were available from Chesil Beach nearby meant that there was no chance of his stock running out, although provenance was a bit dodgy.

Dont forget Richmond and the Inchtuthil nails. I believe that many were sold off as sets (one of each size), some of which occasionally crop up on Ebay:

Hmmmm....not entirely happy with selling it off! Seems to me that we actively sell archaeology off to developers with the public firmly held at arms length whilst we do so.....Big Grin
