Crikey hosty, I thought posting links to obscene websites would be outwith the AUP - that http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.co.uk must be filthy judging by the number of x's!!

Seriously though, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But some people are just clueless kxxxheads... I'm dying to see the offending site!

Well, if they don't reply, you certainly will.

The issue is actually quite wide reaching.. where some of the plagiarism is in the form of documents, where by rebranding and replacing names, one has to consider whether they understand what has been said. Referencing is one thing we all do, and indeed often use templates to do our work, we often cite sources, but we have hopefully read them, understood them, and then produce original work based upon it... after suitably acknowledging the sources. If this is what some students feel is hard work (ie copy - paste) then gawd help us!

And the xxxx nature of the site.. well, it would be good, IF they stopped copying.

But just to clarify a more general point David...you dont have any objection to another archaeological web site providing a link to BAJR or acknowledging BAJR or providing reference to BAJR?

For example on our Norwegian Archaeology Forum site (http://www.arkeologiforum.no) suggesting to members they consult BAJR as the best source for UK archaeological job vacancies and Past Horizons magazine as a great read and providing a direct link, but not quoting directly from either site.

Just checking (before I get outed and abused....)

:0 no indeed not... and I do the same...

The copyright on links is interesting.. where the url itself is copyrighted, but linking to an external site, using that url is not. You could also have (for example) pornbabes website linking to BAJR.. in which case, I might not like to be associated.. and I would request the link removed.

In this case, it is a compilation copyright. Where I have taken time to collect, one by one, review, classify and describe a list of websites. In this case... copying is illegal.

The tricky bit comes in for example rival telephone directories.. where of course the entries will be the same, where the difference comes is IF the rival telephone directory, rather than creating the directory from scratch, just copied and pasted the entire yellow pages.

So.. phew... no.. no worries at all.

indeed, I would love to know about all the Norwegian archaeology companies, so i could compile another list Smile At the end of the day, you should only trust your own work... becasue then you have been to every site, checked it, verified it, understood it, and included it. (they can of course request to be removed) I always email all the groups and companies to ensure they are happy to be included.... after all, not everyone would like to be on BAJR... Smile

When the BAJR Federation page starts offcially I intend to launch my 'Working outside of the UK' group by providing links to Scandinavian archaeological employers.....and hope to encourage other extra-UK archaeologists to do the same for their own little corner of some foreign soil that is forever....etc etc...

well the letter has had some effect, where they have now chopped a few words off the end of the link descriptions. (oh, and got rid of the dead link - probably could not find the real link, after all, that takes a knowledge of what you are doing). However as they do have this at the top of the page.

(All links and decriptions are sourced from the associated websites shown on this page)

and they have now altered the text from what was obviously from BAJR, then one suspects that the statement was not true. Looks like they don't get it?

I look forward to their letter of apology, as that should be at my desk by Monday - or their universities will certainly have some interesting discussions. and I will then initiate the actions laid out in the cease and desist email.
