Archaeologists go on STRIKE! - BAJR Host - 4th June 2008

MoLAS archaeologists have voted for strike action... to be taken on Monday 9th June.

More information will be available soon.

BAJR is supporting this strike action.

I will be shutting down the site for the day

9am - 5pm on Monday.

I would like others to pledge support... and would realy like as many people to carry out a symbolic gesture of support.. such as a 10 minute solidarity action. Not enough to disrupt your work.. but enough to show that we - as professionals - will stand together.

I am expecting more information later today.

Archaeologists go on STRIKE! - 1man1desk - 4th June 2008

I'm not sure that shutting down BAJR for the day would be a very constructive way of supporting the action at MoLAS. After all, BAJR is a grass-roots discussion thread that those on strike may want to use during the strike itself, not an archaeological unit or an employer's representative organisation.

Would it be better, for instance, to provide a dedicated thread or forum on BAJR for discussion of the issues giving rise to the strike?

That will be here as well...and a direct link to it... however... how to reach everyone who comes here but maybe just comes for the jobs? How better to do something that is noticable... a one day shut down will be noticable... you go to BAJR... and you take notice.

I take your point about the forum remaining open... and so it shall. Thanks for that.

Hi Dave, perhaps a new site mainpage for the day explaining why the site is closed would be a nice touch?

Archaeologists go on STRIKE! - Chew - 5th June 2008

Hello,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I'll do my bit and support the action. It's great to see people making an effort for positive change Smile

Archaeologists go on STRIKE! - BAJR Host - 5th June 2008

Oz... I am designing as we speak.... It will even have a video message Smile

You are right that people have to understand why BAJR has closed.

It is not designed to harm - but inform.

And thanks Chew... perhaps people could come back on Monday to say what they are doing to support..

This has passed me by, what has caused the strike action?
Can't support something if you don't know what it's for....

Archaeologists go on STRIKE! - Paul Belford - 5th June 2008

Why?

Archaeologists go on STRIKE! - Unitof1 - 5th June 2008

Who should we target our as yet unenlightened wrath at- Molas seem to be part of a Group that seems to be a schedule two exempt charity (Charities Act 1993) governed by the Museum of London Acts, 1965 and 1986 with twenty Governors on the Board of the Museum, ten of whom are appointed by the Prime Minister and ten by the City of London (resident voting population about 6000 and then some extremely odd mandate involving all directors of dodgy London registered firms) and as of 6th April 2008 they say that they are jointly funded by the Greater London Authority which is headed by Boris Johnson as Mayor of London (who might be a bit mifted he as he does not seem to be doing any important appointing of governers, and the City of London Corporation with a Mr David Lewis as its current Lord Mayor. The new Molas web site still gives the impression that they get funding from the Department for culture, media and sport that they were claiming to be part of until they changed their web site ((although the agreement would appear to have run out in 2006, what has been happening for the last two years)).

This is how their Director described themselves back in 2002 to the All-Party Parliamentary Archaeology Group Committee on the state of archaeology in the 21st century:

MoLAS is an archaeological contracting unit ? nobody in the unit likes the word ?contracting? ? that provides professional archaeological services to the property sector in the context of town and country planning and environmental planning requirements. It provides a wide range of services, from advice through to field work and carrying out land surveys. We effectively spend most of our time integrating multidisciplinary research into construction programmes. Our focus is trying to delivery meaningful results for cost-effective archaeology, which has a significant impact on our competitive position in today?s market.

Spotting the archaeologist in this beast gets even harder, the ifa claim that Molas are also an RAO (although you cant always tell as they may not have paid their fees yet)

Can someone tell us why MOLAS staff have voted for strike action? I'm all for solidarity in principle, but if we're going to bring the country to its knees (!) we should at least know what we're meant to be supporting.
