Holiday Pay Ruling - mercenary - 22nd March 2006

And have more competition for my job than I really want?

Holiday Pay Ruling - Tile man - 22nd March 2006

Quote:quote:It seems that university based units may have more flexibility with pay rates than has been previously suspected

It's a matter for the individual university and their human resource department - to your one case there are the severl mentiond by David on the 'pay analysis' thread. Different organisations will be able to pay differently because of: benefits package; geographical location; local regulatory framework; structure and detail of job descriptions; nature of client base; services offered; nature of local and national competition; expereince and efficiency of workforce; experience and efficiency of mangement; negotiation framework in the organisation; union recognition in the workforce; commitment of organisation to other costs; training oppertunities; bonus schemes in operation - etc etc the use of anecdotal or one off examples does not really make the case for an overnight payrise over 6 times greater than that of inflation

Holiday Pay Ruling - kevin wooldridge - 23rd March 2006

The payment of a dignity wage; the introduction of holiday pay, sick pay and compassionate leave and pension rights have become a necessity because of years and years of abuse in matters of archaeological employment. The fact that many of these abuses could be righted for as little as a one-off payment of 13% shows that the situation is redeemable given a concerted will across the industry.

I accept every single point you have made about business competitiveness in archaeology etc, local and regional factors etc, business and management efficiency etc, but IMHO archaeology does need a great grand gesture (even if that does require dragging and screaming) to right many of the errors of the past. The 13% would after all only affect the worst of employers. For many the extra costs would be considerably less and for some (such as Mercenary's employer) probably nothing at all.

Holiday Pay Ruling - mercenary - 23rd March 2006

Absolutely right Kevin. A ?300 minimum dignity wage would cost my employer nothing. It would also not do a thing to my bottom line, but I'm still going to support it wholeheartedly.Big Grin

Holiday Pay Ruling - BAJR Host - 23rd March 2006

So can we have a min dignity wage for each BAJR Grade then please... (something I can highlight at the IFA Conference... I need some inspiration Wink

Another day another WSI?

Nothing scientific here but....the dignity wage level, suggested I believe by the EU for western European economies, is slightly below ?300 pw. However the cachet of the ?300 pw appeals to me (like the 'Dockers Tanner') so I would suggest that as the minimum for an experienced archaeologist, roughly PIFA grade. I would be understanding for a lesser rate for inexperienced archaeologists of ?275 pw. Therefore

Trainee: ?275 pw LG Grade 3 (SCP 13) BAJR G3
PIFA grade ?300 pw LG Grade 3 (SCP 17) BAJR G4
AIFA grade ?350 pw LG Grade 4 (SCP 22) BAJR G5
MIFA grade ?400 pw LG Grade 5 (SCP 27) BAJR G6

Holiday Pay Ruling - Tile man - 23rd March 2006

Rather than expect MIFAs to take a pay cut (c.f. my comments on http://www.bajr.org/BAJRForum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=587&whichpage=2) I would like the increased levels of responsibility at the different IFA grades to be recognised and rewarded appropiately. Increasing the size of the bands also enable the proper recognition of experience within those bands
so folowing the appag recomendation of comparing archaeologists with field surveyors I would suggest aspirational wages along the lines of:

PIFA (Bajr Grade 2&3?)?15,600
AIFA (BAJR grade 4&5) ?23,000
MIFA (BAJR grade 6&7) ?30,275

Holiday Pay Ruling - Reggie - 23rd March 2006

I don't understand Kevin's suggested pay scale as he has PIFA down for BAJR Grade 4 which is supervisor level and trainee as BAJR Grade 3 which is for experienced diggers !

I would expect a supervisor to have at least a couple of years under their belt, but probably at lot more. However, you can apply for PIFA with just 6 months field experience plus an archaeology degree or 1 year's experience plus a non-relevant degree. This would equate to BAJR Grades 2/3. Anyone who doesn't yet qualify for PIPA would be BAJR 1 /Trainee.

Tile Man's suggested scale looks more appealing, but with the addition of an entry / trainee level at about 14K.

Sorry! Apologies for any confusion.

My pay scales were the rate I believe should be the minima for the roles of PIFA, AIFA and MIFA. I only included the current BAJR scale to show what the equivalent grade would be if my suggested wage minima were in place right now. I would expect of course that revised BAJR scales would show a relative rise in the archy hierarchy.

So there is no confusion, perhaps I should have shown it this way.

Trainee: ?275 pw LG Grade 3 (SCP 13)
PIFA grade ?300 pw LG Grade 3 (SCP 17)
AIFA grade ?350 pw LG Grade 4 (SCP 22)
MIFA grade ?400 pw LG Grade 5 (SCP 27)

[u]Revised BAJR gradings</u>

BAJR 1: Trainee ?275-299 pw
BAJR 2: Site Assistant ?300-324 pw
BAJR 3: Experienced Arch. ?325-349 pw
BAJR 4: Supervisor ?350-399 pw
BAJR 5: PO ?400
BAJR 6: PM ?400+
BAJR 7: Unit director ?400+

My suggestions are of course the minima for the post. I would never suggest anyone takes a pay-cut (other than Sven Goran Eriksson!)

Holiday Pay Ruling - Reggie - 23rd March 2006

Thanks for the clarification., Kevin. Looks much better now ! Wink
