Could you give me a list about the common misconceptions that you believe metal detectorists have about archaeologists. I'm serious about it so its not a joke.
I would like to make a fact sheet and FAQ that covers most things.
We could also make one regarding detecting. There isn't anything out there and I think this would be a good place to start to get the ball rolling.

David could you help me get the list and "separate the wheat from the chaff"?

Yes I will... and we are alos colelcting from detectorists to ensure that both groups 'see' myths busted.!

Ones I had... (back 3 years ago) but one still held by many today.

1. If I seed a site with washers or alluminium foil that will prevent Nighthawks

2. Detectorists are the same as Nighthawks

3. Anyone can just pick up a metal detector and use it straight away.... they are easy to use.

4. Detectors can work anywhere anytime, even in long grass or hard clay pastures for example.

Hi
Hosty, Although you may very occasionaly hear some of these from people, I wouldn't describe any of them as "common misconceptions" that archaeologists have about mds.

Perhaps more common are:

1. Most MDs do not declare their finds (to either PAS or HERs).

2. When finds are declared the location given is too vague.

3. The reason MDs object to declaring findspots to HERs (particularly online HERs) is that other MDS will loot "their" site.

4. Many MDs know who the most "dodgy" members of clubs tolerate their behaviour instead of criticising and ostracising them.

5. MD clubs are male dominated, commonly misogynistic and have a thriving secondary use as pornography exchanges.

common misconceptions that you believe metal detectorists have about archaeologists.

Based on some of the exchanges on the recent Time Team thread, the most common misconception (that most non-archaeologists, not just MDs have) is that all archaeology is funded by the tax-payer.

For detectorists' misconceptions, how about 'archaeologists are interested in artefacts'. I can't stand all that old bric a brac myself. Now soil: there's a much more interesting subject.

Steven: 'pornography exchanges'??

Hi Tom
Only repeating what I've been told by those who know.

I 'ahem' wonder if you could direct me to my nearest Metal Detecting club? [:I]

I would like to know thoughts about what you 'percieve' detectorists do..

so I don't mind if they are daft...

The idea is to have a page of each... where both sides explode the myths of the others

then we can move on!

Hi Vader
Yeah I second that observation. It also seems that not only are all archaeologists (over)paid by public funds but every time a MD finds something we charge out to the site and start digging it up.
