Salary Benchmarking Project - Update

Working with consultant Frank Price, the working group has identified 14 ‘benchmark’ posts, selected to represent a wide range of archaeological roles across the three IFA grades of corporate membership. Based on job descriptions supplied by various organisations and the professional expertise of the working group, job role questionnaires have been completed for each of the benchmark posts. Information from the questionnaires has been entered into the JEGS programme, producing a numerical score for each post. The posts have been grouped into IFA grades (recognising that many posts can span IFA grades) and the scores have been grouped into ranges which can now be compared with JEGS scores and salary ranges from the following organisations (chosen because JEGS data was available for them): British Library, British Museum, Countryside Agency, English Nature, National Gallery, Ordnance Survey and Hydrographic Agency.

The analysis of archaeological JEGS scores against the comparators is currently taking place (carried out by Frank Price) and he will produce a report, identifying how current IFA minimum salaries compare with the equivalent salary ranges from the comparator organisations and will make recommendations for future actions. This report will be presented to the IFA Council in January for their consideration. Future revisions to the minimum salaries will be the subject of extensive consultation with members and RAOs.

British Library, British Museum, Countryside Agency, English Nature, National Gallery, Ordnance Survey and Hydrographic Agency?

Am really sorry for showing my ignorance hear but why is the bench marking not against the construction industry an industry which like it or not we are now bedfellows with?

:face-huh:

Salary Benchmarking Project - Update - BAJR Host - 16th December 2007

It was with people who had also used a similar form of benchmarking.. JEGs

and also closest to who 'we' are .... ie... survey, finds, heritage management, specialist fieldworkers etc

Hope that explains

But arent most of these titles just archaeologists in different sectors who are also underpaid? Wouldnt it make more sense to look outside the industry at those with similar experience and qualifications?

Lets hope not... or my time and everyone elses was wasted!

Farcical.

The work of the "hydrographic agency" is in no way comparable to any archaeological post (although they do hold an archive and do survey). Equally farcical is the fact that all the posts are government posts.

The pay structure is bound to be totally different.

They are all parts of the Civil Service, although some are quangos and expected to be financially self supporting, such as the OS. As far as I can see, JGES is the civil service benchmarking sceme:

http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/iam/cs_policy/employment/jegs.asp

I applaud BAJR for devoting so much time to this, and I appreciate that it must be difficult to choose jobs to benchmark against. If the idea was to use the civil service, then why not just benchmark against English Heritage? There are plenty of archaeologists covering all branches and specialisms. However, most of us work for commercial companies or local government. I await the results of Mr Price's work with interest.

As do I.... As do I....

I seriously hope this has not been a waste of time... but if I had from the start... then I would not have got involved.. I expect to see a serious look at how best to describe our posts and how they relate to external posts of similar required knowledge, ability, management, training, actual activities undertaken... it was all very complicated.. and Dr P is right, in as much as an archaeological field surveyor is not the same as an OS surveyor... but it is possible to compare what they do... look at JEGS for each and see where the pay stand in relation to the score.

Lets wait and see.

An OS surveyor has a similar skill set to an archaeological surveyor - they use similar kit and the OS do map archaeology.

But a hydrographic surveyor has absolutely no overlap with archaeology. David do you know what a hydrographer actually does?
