Archaeology of the Thornborough Area

an excellent use of web in the planning process .. they (agree with the project or not) -
have shown how to use technology to provide information, so it shows it can (on a long term project) be part of the process - and should be part of the site archive..

I like it... (still a few rough edges) but I like it...in fact love it.....

Quote:quote:Welcome to the Thornborough section of the APC web site, which aims to provide information on the archaeology around Thornborough Henges. Over the last four or five years so much information has been uploaded regarding Nosterfield and Ladybridge that we decided it was time to re-organise the site, and this is the result.

You can find information on all the archaeological investigations related to Nosterfield Quarry that have taken place, access the original site records and finds lists, browse photographs and view an online GIS (interactive map) displaying the archaeological features, fieldwalking plots etc.

The various archaeological works undertaken on behalf of Tarmac since 1995 are currently being brought together to form a single body of data, which can be accessed through the interactive map on this site. This is a work in progress, and it will obviously take time to assimilate the information collected over such a long period and by a number of different organisations, so please bear with us. We hope that the data will be supplemented by integrating other data sets, such as metal detecting finds etc. from other professional and amateur organisations alike.

This will eventually supercede the Nosterfield and Ladybridge sections of this web site, but the legacy pages will remain available through the links from the APC home page.

Please note that the resources available through this site are currently in development. Many past datasets are still to add, and new data will appear as work on site progresses. See Site Map for a brief overview of the web site structure.

Archaeological excavation at Ladybridge Farm has now commenced. For BAJR users information we have a live web page which is being updated on a weekly basis.

In addition to a site diary, visitors to the site can access an interactive map, context records, finds index and photographs as they become entered into the database at the end of each week.

The link to the web page is

Please feel free to take a look and comment and I hope that you find it interesting.

cheers rat - eventually will iron them out, but two hours drive, eight hours digging, eat, wash - not much time left for web design. i have no idea how you find time to keep bajr going! any particular criticisms or suggestions would be very welcome.

your welcome... and believe it or not suffering the same (ish!!) reports to write a community project at the weekends.. and tooo much to do... I wonder myself... at least I have worked out just how to get my total station to talk to my tablet pc.. with no rs232 connection! Know how you feel!

Heres a quick one... I could not find the standing stones on the google map... (nice touch by the way! and nice use of custom icons!)

I meant what I said about loving the site... its a template.. that others could do well to emulate.

i just wish the archaeology was a bit more interesting! standing stones are a fair way down south (east) - just zoom out a bit...

I thank you Smile

Have you considered podcasts and video? I know that its more work.. I am working on a video share heritage site just now.. http://www.pasthorizons.tv and do a weekly podcast of news... it takes a bit of time.. but with a decent mike and some free editing software (I use Audacity) it does add another dimension.

I would temper my rough edges.. with an additional very very few rough edges Smile

Is it possible to template the format and roll it out as a fully fledged CMS for other groups to use on sites that warrant it? Large Road sites, Pipelines, Olympics etc...?

The ability to 'see' a site from day to day, is I know not new ... was up for it myself whne part of the bid for the Scottish Parliament site.. with live broadcast etc.. often people don't have the skills you have to implement it.

Video etc? If we find anything that warrants it, but who wants to watch footage of root disturbance? As for creating a CMS template, it could be done, only this thing has grown organically over quite some time. Every time I have an idea I add a bit more to it, and through necessity the context database is an amalgamation of several recording systems and contains various legacy fields that will eventually be removed - once all the previous data has been sorted out. Knowing what I know now, it would be great to sit down and start from scratch. I'd love to go back and tidy it all up … or even better have started off with a perfect dataset (not that it's bad - just a tad confusing now and again dealing with over a decade of context records from several different sources).
