...despite free lectures [yes, I know I should take the fees, but always seems wrong somehow], pro bonos and research projects/papers
...and doesn't include all the background reading that most field archaeologists clearly never do, to judging by the **** that fills the discussion boxes on most context sheets and the discussion section of many commercial grey-lit reports :face-stir:

37 is plenty anything over is time and a half........... one reason the wages are so crap is that many people work lots of their own time for free without question.... a real bonus for the employer ! (arse licking in my book)..... This applies particularly to those doing archaeology as a second career who don't really need the money.

Since Jack is too busy to play Devil's Advocate [he's been let loose writing a huge monograph, Lordy help us...]...
...Clients aren't (usually) prepared to pay for quality work, and unfortunately most curators etc seem to settle for barely adequate, so if you have any professional pride and want to do anything half decently you have to put the time (usually your own) in...or not
And those people who stay that extra 30 minutes in the p***ing rain at the end of the job to rescue those extra couple of samples or whatever DO, in fact, get remembered next time around. I'm probably, in any conventional sense, unemployable, but I've never let that hold me back, I've just always made sure that I'm indispensible :face-approve:

I think I heard on the BBC one line news of your day or week compilation saying something along the gist of "I went into work and did nothing all day to see if anybody noticed." I think that this was what prentice was up to in coining this thread. Where the concept of working hours went most bazaar was the 16 hours rules and family tax credits.

I don't think professional pride has anything to do with doing that little bit extra to cover up for others failings... I go to work and try to do my job to the best of my ability...during my paid working hours...after that well maybe I think that there are better things to do with my time.
