Not nearly enough arguments lately, so time for some more questions:
  1. Why do archaeology?
  2. Why do you do archaeology?

Don't let me down folks, I love the ermmm... discussions... that sometimes erupt on these forums. Or is that fora?

Geoff Carver I don't any more; too old, too overqualified; too many publications.
I trained to do GIS, but there was no market for that, so I went to digitizing in CAD, then mapping databases to CIDOC-CRM, but there's no demand for that either, any more

Douglas Scott I was born curious and want to know the why of everything. Being an archaeo-astronomer, I actually get to see the solar/lunar events our ancestors aligned their monuments to, but all I can do is speculate as to the why, as no one seems to understand what the hell I'm talking about, laughing.

knowledge is power.

Ultimate knowledge is ultimate power

But through understanding is gained the ability to judge

The only way to understand is to look at something from a long enough timescale

The path to ultimate understanding lies within archaeology/palaeontology/geology....xenogeology....xenoarchaeology....etc etc

but a time machine helps

Hi Hamish. Just to freak you out, I think we have met. But to keep the element of suspense which sustains every story, I won't say where. }Smile

It's odd in a way that the first question seems harder to answer than the second. We all have our individual reasons for doing archaeology, and I can associate with every answer given on that one. But, the justification for archaeology as a practice does seem a little harder to pin down.
