IfA and the Royal Charter - update on progress - Unitof1 - 4th July 2013

sorry in advance to have a go Gnomeking I don't think that reports or archives are important. It seems to me that it is the archaeology which should make the report or archive important if anybody thinks that it is worthwhile to produce them. Important archaeology is something that is worth owning and over which criticisms can be made. Everything else is vanity and economically unsustainable. Nobody whats your reports or put it more bluntly nobody will pay you any money for them I can guarantee you that 99% of all reports ever attempted if tossed in a bin will not make a difference to anybody.

Work is all about getting paid to do something. The system we have at the moment makes it possible to attempt to screw money out of a developer before they can develop but once that field work is out of the way the rest is vanity. Thing is you want to base chartering and the whole point of the ifa on monitoring. What I would agree to is a system which once you have joined allows you to do what you want. Like once you qualify as a doctor you can prescribe drugs to your clients. If you want to go around producing most excellent reports out of a load of old rubbish please don't drag me into it.

Surprising how all those old reports sometime add together to make something pretty good - but then I'd forgotten Unit doesn't believe in HERs or writing DBAs, so he'll never experience that pleasure. I've regularly made sense of an apparently 'uninteresting' grey lit report by realising that what they found relates directly to something I've been doing.

As a local e.g. up here, Pete Wilson's monograph on Roman Catterick was essentially a distillation of dozens of small excavations (and one big one) stretching over half a century, but stuck together its now one of the best investigated Roman small towns in Britain - shame he had a 1996 cutoff for inclusion, there's as much again awaiting 'Cataractonium II' and they're about to upgrade the A1 through there. Because of that synthesis of all those overlooked grey lit reports that Unit so loathes, the cumulative assemblage now regularly attracts additional bits of research, adding to its group value, so that a series of small excavations, watching briefs (and NWBs), GI monitoring etc which individually were only of local or sometimes regional value are now regarded as being of at least national and possibly international importance.

Keep sending in those grey lit reports for those of us who do actually use them, published or not :face-approve:

The poll's gone a bit flat, time to call the army in? Big Grin

Dino you putting words into my mouth. If you want compilations of reports that's up to you. I bet that there were lots of "archaeological" events around caterrick which did not make it into report and also that there are probably a lot of reports of the catteric area that you probably consider a lode of rubbish. And I don't care and you cant make me narna. What I loath is the fact that if I dig hole and cant be bothered to record it for what ever reason that its any body else's business and especially that it should be a matter of ifa or curators, particularly if they try to make it central to their reason for existence. I don't expect you to understand.

IfA and the Royal Charter - update on progress - Dinosaur - 4th July 2013

Thats ok, I don't

Actually, as far as I know I now have at least some sort of report for every archaeological intervention within a c.2mile radius of Catterick village barring a couple I know of and will need to get copies of in the next couple of months since we're about to rip up the bit of landscape they refer to. And all the AP, geophys etc - and with a couple of exceptions they are, rather unusually, in general pretty good, can join all the bits up anyway :face-approve:

IfA and the Royal Charter - update on progress - Unitof1 - 4th July 2013

How much profit you expecting to make?

IfA and the Royal Charter - update on progress - Dinosaur - 5th July 2013

None at all

Meanwhile - back at the thread about the IfA and Chartered Status.

It seems that there is a desire to have some sort of protected status for Archaeologists. the who and how is still a bit vague though

IfA and the Royal Charter - update on progress - Unitof1 - 5th July 2013

and will it be based on public servants running HERs where they expect to have free copyrights.

Protect from who exactly? :face-thinks:

All IFA want to do is protect themselves commercially from other competing archaeologists who don't subscribe to their own particular view of the profession/bank accounts :face-stir:
