2013 BAJR Grades - BAJR - 30th October 2012

The IfA are currently looking at their Pay Minima for 2013/14

And they need replies from RO postholders as well as members.

Their current rates are
PIfA responsibilities ?15,836
AIfA responsibilities ?18,445
MIfA responsibilities ?23,844

The BAJR Equivalents

G2 : (ie Basic Site Assistant) ?16,018.73 (?308.05 pw)
G4 : (ie Technical 2 or Supervisor )?18,657.84 (?358.81 pw)
G 5/6 : (ie Senior Specialist, Senior Project Officer or Junior Project Manager) ?24,159.43

Now here is the bit... I want your views

Cost of Living stands at 1.7%

BUT I am committed ( as the IfA were) from the Pay debate back in 2008 to increase and try and close the gap with other professions... in some cases as great as 30% + BAJR has year on year increased incrementaly, and as yet I don't see any great collapse

However, push too hard and there may be consequences.

The IfA are looking at a freeze - a 1.7% rise and an above inflation rise. ( plus some other benefit add ons, that very rarely apply to site staff... pensions normally kick in long after you have left the site)

For myself there are only two options... A cost of living rise ( 1.7% ) meaning you effectively are poor at the same rate... OR a 2% rise... which means you are a little better off .

OR should I go crazy? and opt for a 3.5 %

Here are the results...

  • NO CHANGE: ?16,018.73 (?308.05 pw)
  • 1.7% (cost of Living) ?16291.05 (?313.28 pw) extra ?5.23 per week
  • 2% Above Inflation ?16,338.36 (?314.21 pw) extra ?6.16 per week
  • 3.5% Bridging the gap ?16579.38 (?318.83 pw) extra ?10.70 per week
This is for the those who are on the lowest wage level. the higher you go, the more the change would be... of course...

There is another option as well...

A differential percentage increase across the grades. though to be fair. the middle grades are the ones that suffer from professional salary gap.

Think about this one... and rather than just opt for Top rate... think about the consequences... think about the options.. and think about the future.

Think also about supporting the Diggers Forum, who in turn will ( I hope) support BAJR. I am no dictator ( though sometimes it would be easier that way!) and most companies already - by and large - already pay on or over the BAJR Grade minima.

Talk about it... and this will also go out to companies for thoughts - once this is better understood.

Thanks

BAJR

This is tricky..a tactical game as ever! It was said recently to Chiz and I that if the IfA minima went up this year some units would struggle, as they would be forced to pay more for the first time. An alternate way of looking at that is to be pleased that finally the IfA minima will result in some people actually getting a pay rise! But of course nobody wants units to go out of business...

Personally I think we should go for CPI+2% rather than just CPI, which for most of us is barely a rise seeing as living costs keep rising. We will see what the newly elected Council think, if enough people respond with a particular preference it may sway things either way. Ideally obviously we would vote for CPI+3.5, and that is where the tactics come in...

Well of course nobody wants to see anyone losing their job, but surely there is a basic lesson in economics to be heeded here. If a business cannot survive because its business model is based entirely upon depressing wages and lowering price margins then it should be allowed to go to the wall.

Who will benefit as a result? Well everyone else working in the profession thats who!! If the clients are forced into paying higher rates because Cheapo Ripoff Ltd has gone to the wall, we who care about these things should be singing, dancing and generally walking around in a state of schadenfreude filled contentment....I am sure the small number of workers who might lose their jobs as a result will be happy that they have contributed to the greater happiness of a large number of their colleagues!! (The last remark is totally tongue in cheek!!)

Apparently only 25 people respnded to the last consultation...thats why it is being done again. I have replied and gone for the above cost of living increase. People on the bottom of the heap are doing it hard, usually on short contracts and having to travel around. If you cant find the money or the decency within you to pull the lowest paid upwards and out of the Shite then take a hard look at yourself.

The no increase wage options and increase pensions are a bit of a smoke screen-they support the council/govt units who have pay freezes and already pay above 8% on their pensions. These options mean that they do not have to do a thing financially-full steam sideways......

My personal write-in on the original consultation (no idea who the other 24 were) was to suggest that the IfA raise their MINIMUM salary levels to the rate of their RECOMMENDED starting salary. For some grades this would have involved an increase of 25% on current rates...

I can see this is going to require a more tailored approach... and a bit more consultation..

There is going to be a major revamp to BAJR coming up - nothing drastic - more an easier integrated system. but the general layout remains the same. plus a clearout of dead accounts here. so large mailout and consultation at the same time may be useful.

I think that is true. having had some intersting conversations over the past year with people going .. " I know what it is like " " oh I know the pay is bad... " " we can't compete" etc... IF they truely did remember what it was like... then there would be no argument.

I look forward to Doug and DF with BAJR support creating the League of Units ... sort of like a Which report.

Um..just this mornng received a mail from Prospect (who sat on the IfA advisory committee) stating that the IfA have decided to recommend an INCREASE in minimum salaries for this year. If that is the case it seems to rather rule out option 1: No change.

What is the point of consultation if a decision has already been made?

2013 BAJR Grades - P Prentice - 2nd November 2012

say no to pay cuts dressed as pension contributions and like me vote for no 6
PIfA responsibilities ?16,343
AIfA responsibilities ?19,035
MIfA responsibilities ?24,607
