It shouldn't be all that expensive to add the 'also for work' bit to your insurance.
I seem to remember that there are two different types of this. A 'transporting people to and from a workplace' -type and a vehicle for only work - type (e.g. taxi). You definitely want the first type and don't need the second one. Also shop around. Uswitch.com is brilliant, I've saved a fortune (?600) on one quote!

It might be those inconvenient little points on my licence that are the problem, that and I am often self employed. Seem to have had a bad run of luck with police cameras especially as I was only fractionally over the speed limit !!! I do tend to stick to limits as I agree with them.
Might also be the vehicle which is almost new. Shopping around is the way to go

Been discussed on a previous thread (ages ago) - works out a lot cheaper in the long run to get a new/nearly new rather than endlessly repairing/throwing away bangers (and time costs money etc), and they even give you some money back when you trade it in as long as you shovel some of the mud out first

Jack is entirely correct - it costs a tiny amount to upgrade to business use. Even with the astronomical fuel costs everyone is facing there is still money to be made claiming mileage. Personally I value jobs far from the office. It's great opportunity to make a bit of extra wedge.

Have you really done the Maths? You might be clawing a bit back if you have a good day subsistence allowance but it costs me around ?75 to fill up with diesel so that 40p a mile allowance is not bringing in any extra once you factor in things like insurance, road tax, MOT and maintenance.
