At the G20 summit this November world leaders have a chance do something good for the world, by introducing a Robin Hood Tax.

It would help stop the cuts, tackle climate change and global poverty and help control the casino banking that got us into this mess.
Lots of governments are already on board. To date, our own government has been lukewarm in public, while opposing it behind closed doors.
But cracks are beginning to show and if enough of us raise our voices now we can make a difference.
Tell David Cameron to ignore the banking lobby and take a stand at the G20 that will be admired worldwide.
Tell him to put the people before the banks.
Tell him to vote for Robin Hood.

Email the Prime Minister now

Going To Work is a project of the Trades Union Congress (TUC)

Can we have some threads on here on a few other non-archaeology things like surrealist art and sushi-making too? :face-stir:

I guess in the land of Dinosaurs, the current squeeze on public spending that will result in cuts to museums, libraries, archaeological curators, EH, HS and CADW etc etc has nothing whatsoever to do with the world banking crisis and its consequences. I also guess therefore that suggesting reform of the taxation system to help restore public finances wouldn't be a great improvement either.

As for surrealist art and sushi......gosh slap me with a mackerel dare any archaeologist ever think they are intellectually superior to Andy Capp cartoons and mushy peas!!

Robin Hood - Dinosaur - 22nd October 2011

Oh, well, if you're going to take such a broad-brush, inclusive approach to things, could we also campaign on here against the loud students around here who also impede the smooth flow of archaeology by keeping me awake and also occasionally kicking the wing-mirrors off my car, rather than using the Newcastle City Council Website?

or are you treated with such ridicule on proper political websites that this is the only place you think you can be heard? Get a life

Robin Hood - BAJR - 22nd October 2011

Steady people... if we don't like a thread.. don't read it. Don't reply.

And Actually... a few threads about loud students around here who also impede the smooth flow of archaeology by keeping me awake and also occasionally kicking the wing-mirrors off my car would be just as welcome - and amusing (unless of course it is your wing mirror) :0:0

"Can we have some threads on here on a few other non-archaeology things like surrealist art and sushi-making too?"

Most posts on here are not about archaeology, but rather archaeologists, which is completely different. I agree with bajr, as a forum we should be able to cover topics regardless of whether the topic directly impacts on archaeology, as the topic may impact on archaeologists (which is far more important).

This forum should be for archaeologists, about archaeologists and by archaeologists, NOT just about archaeology.

Hah, its no good being sarcastic by being unintentionally true. The public spending squeeze would be happening anyway, regardless of any financial crisis, and of course is making the situation worse. Most of the cuts to museums, curators etc are, deep down, nothing to do with a world banking crisis. Its ideological - using the supposed need for cuts as an excuse. With councils being told to save tens of millions over 2 or 3 years does anyone think that the tens of thousands saved by laying off the odd HER officer, eventually once redundancy costs etc are factored in, make a noticeable difference?

Obviously ,if I'm wrong, as soon as the economy is declared to be OK, then every single public authority will immediately rehire/expand their heritage depts back to where they were if not beyond...

Perhaps the Fed Forums could be increased from 6 to 7, this could cover non-archaeological topics/discussions, petitions that members might feel that others would be interested in reading as well.

Whether we like it or not, we are all part of what happens in the wider world around us, and whether it interests us or impacts upon us such a forum would give a place for such topics to be aired.

After all, what harm could it do? if nothing else it could remind us there is a big wide world outside of our trenches!!!

With a lot of both good and bad happening. :face-approve:

And there are plenty of other chat rooms to discuss them in - I even found one for discussing the Leland Clocks - or are you suggesting they should all be scrapped in favour of an all-inclusive BAJR forum?
