Open Source software - BAJR - 13th October 2011

THought it would be useful to create an ultimate list of Open Source Software.. which I can then collate

So to start off... with the usual suspects and a couple of interesting ones:

Open Office : http://www.openoffice.org/
open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.

QGIS: http://www.qgis.org/
Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System

Hugin: http://hugin.sourceforge.net/
With Hugin you can assemble a mosaic of photographs into a complete immersive panorama, stitch any series of overlapping pictures and much more.

GPSBabel : http://www.gpsbabel.org/
GPSBabel is a cross-platform, free software to transfer routes, tracks, and waypoint data to and from consumer GPS units, and to convert between over a hundred types of GPS data formats

Moodle: http://moodle.org/
a free source e-learning software platform, also known as a Course Management System

GIMP: http://www.gimp.org/
A freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring for raster graphics

Inkscape: http://inkscape.org/
An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.

Open Source software - Oxbeast - 13th October 2011

Zotero: http://www.zotero.org/

This is a plug in for Firefox that allows you to organise your data. It does bibliographic management, no more typing in lists of references in Word. You can share lists of refs between user groups. It can sort out and index all the .PDFs saved on your PC. This is seriously useful and saves you a lot of time.

Scribus: http://www.scribus.net/canvas/About

Desk top publishing. I haven't used this one, but it looks great.

Open Source software - kevin wooldridge - 13th October 2011

I can recommend Proge_CAD, comaptible with AutoCAD versions up until AutoCAD 2009. free to users who are non-profit generators

Proge_CAD: http://www.progesoft.com/
an easy replacement for AutoCAD? and AutoCAD LT?! Though only free to non-profit organisations

Photoscape www.photoscape.org/
does most of the things that early versions of Photoshop can do....

Open Source software - kevin wooldridge - 13th October 2011

This is not exactly Open Source, but it is an interesting free facility.....if you register on the ArcGIS website as an Esri Global User you get access to lots of ArcGIS free goodies including a source of worldwide downloadable vector maps...

http://www.arcgis.com

Open Source software - kevin wooldridge - 13th October 2011

Again not exactly Open Source, but a very useful free metadata editor/photo geotagger

iTag: http://www.itagsoftware.com/
A tool that embeds title, description and keywords into your photos and movies.

Open Source software - SurveyingArchaeology.com - 13th October 2011

Pixlr: http://pixlr.com/editor/
I'd definitely recommend Pixlr. It does almost everything Photoshop does but is online Smile

And of course GRASS for an open source GIS package

GRASS: http://grass.fbk.eu/
Commonly referred to as GRASS, this is free Geographic Information System (GIS) software used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization.

Open Source software - Benj - 13th October 2011

Might be worth nothing that openoffice is now pretty much dead in the water.
Most people, and Linux distro's, have switched to LibreOffice...

LibreOffice: http://www.libreoffice.org/
LibreOffice is the power-packed free, libre and open source personal productivity suite for Windows, Macintosh and GNU/Linux, that gives you six feature-rich applications for all your document production and data processing needs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base.

Open Source software - Les Dodd - 13th October 2011

These is also gvSig, as a GIS package its actually (fairly) simple to use.
OA do a version http://oadigital.net/software/gvsigoade/gvsigdownload, its nicely done.
The original is at http://www.gvsig.org, but when I last tried it (a while ago) it gave me help in Spanish and I struggle with English...

gvSig: http://oadigital.net/software/gvsigoade
The publicly funded gvSIG project is a free and open source Geoinformation System (GIS), that enables users to interactively visualize, manage, modify and analyze spatial information in the form of digital maps, images and database tables.

Open Source software - Noddy - 13th October 2011

Also LibreOffice, a fork of OpenOffice which has been going for about a year. http://www.libreoffice.org/. Much quicker than OOo and has more features but a few more bugs have been reported...

Can I second QGIS as an excellent Open Source basic GIS package.

Open Source software - Dinosaur - 13th October 2011

Nothing to add to the thread subject (notice I haven't figured out an avatar yet....) - but welcome to the new contributors, 2 in one page! BAJR's figured out how to attract fresh blood :face-approve:
