Hello all,
does anyone know where I can get some cheap or free map tiles for the Greater London area? All I need is the hydrology, topography and (preferably) geology, and it doesn't have to be particularly accurate, as my data is only recorded to ten figure grid references. I certainly don't need street layouts. I will need copyright permission for (non-commercial) publication though.

It doesn't seem too much to ask.

Cheers,

Tom

Do you have a freind at uni? They can access loads of stuff at Edina. Failing, this its hard not to pay for decent map tiles, but if you dont mind taking a slightly odd angle on it, and if you dont need too much accuracy, you could always google 'live local' or 'old maps'.

Only if you're prepared to have your a*se sued off. Most of the good stuff is based on OS material and they are one of the most litigious organisation on earth. I believe that there are even restrictions on some of the old (and theoretically out of copyright) stuff where it is used for 'new' purposes.

I'm still struggling to find a map of rivers in England for my dissertation, and my university doesn't appear to subscribe to edina. Any advice??

Hi Rach. I've pretty well hit a brick wall. Some publications have copyright permissions I could use, but that doesn't help me do the analysis beforehand.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious Rach, but have you asked the Geography department - part of the same "division" now of course! I've had similar problems trying to get hold of geological and soil maps.

Another (silly?) idea - phone or email Ordnance Survey. Yes, they charge, but if it's a one-off for your diss...

Also, have a rummage through the map drawers in the library, especially the right hand one (top floor, left hand end near the archaeology books, against the wall). There is a map in there showing river pollution surveys or something..... but of course it's not digital and it's A1 or A0.....

A good source of mapping is http://www.magic.gov.uk but I couldn't see a national rivers layer on there.
