Current job advert - BAJR - 3rd August 2011

All interesting stuff. Lets be clear here. SOME job titles are legal definitions.. others are not (oh yes... bajr does not sit on fat arse getting rich and buying speedboats ) like supervisor ( honestly!) or PO.

Therefore you have to go to responsibility - now I have been assured about the responsibility attached to this job. IF (and I very much say IF) this job description does not match my description, then there is scope for complaint, AND then the company gets barred. This is usually not helpful, as it is better to reach an agreement. There are certain assuptions being made here.

Now, REd Earth quotes back at me the BAJR Grades ( which I might add I had to create from scratch - and continue to move forward - but that is a side issue - though damn it would be nice if I had support) I know what I see as a PO.. HOWEVER it is up to a company what it calls people. sorry but thats it.

If you think it is cynical, then grand... don't go for it..... but I have to take on trust what people tell me (yes... it is amazing, but I do try to keep things under control, and after hundreds of adverts, I can make mistakes - but before BAJR there was no check) and only if it turns out that the job advert does not match to the expectations - then I can ban a company from advertising, but that is a last resort. THe grades are pretty useful, and have become accepted as expectations of salary. Therefore, if you find one that you think does not match, does that really discredit the only system that actually created a minima? I don;t think so.

As to buying a Speedboat... lol... I don't think I could even afford canoe!

The unit in question may have some problems but, in my experience, so do most. I have worked for them, was treated fairly, and received more than the BAJR-recommended salary for a post at my level of responsibility.

You are absolutely right, but I do find it a bit frustrating having for some time used your very well thought our grades as a means of judging levels, and with it titles (for what they are worth) and I am massively grateful that you did all the work setting them out, so it just seems a bit like a slackening of standards. And also as if some are unilaterally redefining what Project Officer means, which is nice for them.

But, as an example, can I place an advert on the jobs page? Something like this: 'Archaeologist required at BAJR Grade 5' and then can you tick the little boxes for, let's see, Grades 2, 4, and 6. Bingo!

but :face-thinks:.................................no...

This is tightropewalk.

and one that I don't do without thought. THOUGH I am human. :face-huh: and to errr is divine

Current job advert - gonetopot - 4th August 2011

After an evening of a little research (drinking in pub and ringing around) it was interesting to find out about said company that many of the supervisors and office staff had in fact been promoted or trained into their roles and their salaries were on a par with all the other units in the region. As for career progression, its a company of limited size (a medium sized unit) therefore opportunities to 'climb the ladder' are very limited by this very nature... its not a corporation. But this is true in most units aside from OxWexMol.

I think alot of the critics on this thread need to have a sense of perspective and stop grinding their axes. Because if someone is getting paid 20K just to writh DBAs they're either overpaid or underused. We'd all like to see wages go up but we can't get to idealistic - these wages are within the IFA levels and (just) the BAJR levels therefore fit with the industry. If you get the IFA levels increased the RAOs, including this company will ahve to raise wages. Such improvements have to apply to the industry not just be lobbied at individual units.

When you say tightrope, do you really mean, like, a big thick piece of rope or are we talking a piece of string, or a strand of wool, a plank perhaps or even a ladder? After all titles and words are very open to interpretation Smile

It sounds like said company's structure is sensible, well-paid and decent, which is why the adverts seem so odd. I have no axe to grid against them and know basically nothing about them, other than what one hears on the occassionally stinky grape vine.

what job title does it say on your passport or tax return

Not sure. Probably archaeologist as that covers a number of things.

Is an elegant summation of all that is wrong with the profession. Well said. How dare anyone aspire to earn several thousand less than the national average wage or have parity with other graduate roles. Outrageous :0

Current job advert - gonetopot - 4th August 2011

Vulpes - i'm not disagreeing with the fact that people should be paid more, but within the current pay scales of archaeology thats just where that level of responsibility sits, unless you work for a consultancy where you may get paid more for that role. Writing DBAs is IMHO the office level of being a site assistant, and I mean no level of disrespect to the work they do but having done it myself its not that taxing. If you pay more for that level of responsibility then anybody else in a post-excavation/office position will have to be raised too, which is a great idea, but reality would drive more units to the wall.

I think if you want to facilitate higher salaries, you have to look beyond what the units pay, as to how much the clients/developers pay to the units and the whole competitive tendering process (I hear an echo of so many previous threads). And before you say people shoud tender higher - those would bu the units that have gone bust or lost jobs, not the ones that are recruiting.

And for the record, I do aspire to earn much more, but I am realistic
