Draft National Planning Policy Framework - P Prentice - 8th August 2011

Winders Wrote:ALGAO do plenty of campaigning to ensure that archaeology doesn't get forgotten about during planning policy changes, they just don't make much noise about it. Ask yer friendly local County Mountie about them.

The tension in the Draft NPPF is that the formal chapter on heritage follows on from PPG15/16 and PPS5's policies, but other elements from other sectors of the document could impact negatively on archaeology and the historic environment. A good example is that Supplementary Planning Docs in Local Plans can no longer constrain development, only speed it up. There goes any use of SPDs to create a local list of buildings and sites outside of Conservation Areas that Local Authorities wish to protect from demolition/alteration...

Spatial planning - it's holistic, innit.

not do a very good job of saving themselves though and not very good at insisting on standards either

Winders is right, and speaks from experience (rather than blinkered prejudice) having been part of a beleaguered ALGAO member authority. ALGAO members will make themseleves heard on the NPPF, just as they did in relation to PPS5.

perhaps you could enlighten us as to what ALGAO are doing about those authorities who are not providing development control or maintaining a HER?

Draft National Planning Policy Framework - vulpes - 9th August 2011

no, if you've got specific questions for ALGAO I would suggest that you contact them directly. :face-topic:

Draft National Planning Policy Framework - GnomeKing - 9th August 2011

how is not :face-topic: ?

Draft National Planning Policy Framework - vulpes - 9th August 2011

I refer you to the thread title Gnomonic one. If you and PP wish to start an ill-informed kick ALGAO thread feel free I won't be joining you. Thought you'd be out on the streets man anyway, doesn't bedroom anarchy pall eventually?

Draft National Planning Policy Framework - GnomeKing - 9th August 2011

great post! love your passion!
Q's 4 ALGO = fair enough, if thats what U and PP are on about....i would like to know what they think RE: DraftNPP- i certainly have not been Kicking anybody...i support ALGO...
Thus, i refer you dear sir, to the :face-topic: , and ask what it is you wanted to say? (have you been in my bedroom Sad ?)
I don't see much hope for a solution when people are so ready to start with the 'name-calling' and such like - is that productive or a good reflection on a profession desperate to be taken seriously? ... (double non-smiley face, tsk tsk)

You will doubtless pontificate upon 'inclusivity' ' diversity' 'education' ' a social role/justification' for archaeology when it suites you (to the media, to the public, to the client, to the Legislation Axe-men)...but you fight with each other like niny-whingers....not a great start - and frankly, entirely unconvincing.

If we are going to make any headway, in protecting at least our as yet undamaged archaeology, if not save a proffesion which is at times entirley daft, then we must unite with other people who share Heritage Protection as a goal....that might include eg: "bedroom anarchists", (whatever they are), or even miserable middle-age+ misanthropes, who-think-they-know/done-it-all
(no stirry stick required)

If an archaeologist can not try to see 'The Bigger Picture' then they are merely a mud-tickler or paper-pisser, or even a mechanical-smiley Yuppi-zoid, ... and no archaeologist at alll !

What part of the contemporary socio-political context of DraftNPP is relevant? The future of the economy, no? The free hand to banks and corporations, no? The polices of greed and corruption in government, no? whether the public have bigger concerns, no? whether we will have a country worth living in, never mind 'doing archaeology'....?

If we can not see past the surface to the wider, deeper, and longer patterns at work in our own lives, how can we ever say/do anything meaningful in regard of our Ancestors + their remains.

If we can not 'debate reality like adults' even with each other, how on earth do we profess to be educators, or a profession with a social role, let alone a Science (bru-hoo ha Ha HA!!splutter/choke)?

If we cant see what's going on 'out there', or understand how large-scale societal structures influence individual lives, or see how 'archaeology' fits into the bigger picture, then assuredly we will get what we deserve...ie:
- Lip-service field work,
- erosion of standards and research,
- weak restraints on short-sighted/damaging commercial developments and their associated profits
- A laughable profession dominated by Lackeys-to-Money, slowing sucking the soul and joy from the Discipline and those unfortunate enough to actually practice The Real Thing...

But Vulpz has been in my bedroom (i know it, i found the stains..tsk,tsk), and knows I'll be doing 'Sweet F.A' about it....so its over to you.

GnomeKing Wrote:Q's 4 ALGO = fair enough, if thats what U and PP are on about....i would like to know what they think RE: DraftNPP- .

If you want to know what ALGAO think about the draft NPP, why not ask them directly? In the absence of any formal statement, that's the only way any of us will find out their official position. If people do ask, it may encourage the production of an official statement (though I'd imagine that they're probably already working on it).

GnomeKing Wrote:f we can not 'debate reality like adults' even with each other

I think that even a cursory examination of this message board would suggest that debating like adults may be setting the bar a little high - the best we can hope for is that no-one loses an eye in the ensuing scuffle!

I now await Gnomeking's customary response of 'Great post! Love your passion!' Big Grin

correct :face-approve:

Draft National Planning Policy Framework - P Prentice - 10th August 2011

thought i was asking their unofficial spokesperson in a 'using the forum' sense and i wasnt kicking algao i was wondering what they are for?

Gnomekings foray into the philosophy of archaeology is the most interesting thing i've seen on here for ages - especially the hypo crisis at the end
