I would say that it is a personal decision, but I would strongly encourage any individual archaeologist to join. If, as in your case, you have strong views about what the IFA should do and how, then I would also strongly urge you to be active and campaign from within.
The IFA elects its council and office bearers, so you could put yourself forward for election next time it comes around, probably with a fairly strong support base. Not sure that you could actively campaign for election through BAJR though - that would probably disqualify you.

Not sure that you could make preconditions such as formal recognition of BAJR by IFA - and I am not even sure that the IFA has any formal means of recognising national bodies.
If you became a MIFA, though, it might be possible for BAJR to become an RAO...

Agree with 1man. It is your personal decision, but I would like to see you join. Not only could you fight from within as suggested but you could also see the practicalities and realities of the thing from the inside - and report back to the BAJR folk!
Not sure about BAJR becoming an RAO though - not sure it matters either way to be honest.

It is hoped that the IFA will recognise BAJR just as it recognises the AAIS and CBA. It would not so much be a precondition, but more a step towards unity.

I honestly wish you the very best of luck Mr Hosty (if you so choose).Do be prepared though, the IFA seem to like agendas for change, it gives them something to apply for ten-year feasibility studies for. I honestly do hope that you are able to become a catalyst for change however-I fear that you will be an extremely old man before even the feasibility studies are in........

True as well... but I suppose that by joining and 'testing the waters' so to speak, I stand more of a chance of influencing descisions (of course I have to get in first.... I seem to have also caused a constitutional crisis with my position on the committee of teh Buildings Group)
Next I would spend time seeing what could or could not be done. If it all looks like 10 year flannel... so be it.. I am not one to dally about in that sort of atmosphere so could resign if worsecame to worse.
I have told Peter Hinton that I would join depending on the thoughts of all those who come to BAJR.. at teh moment your comments seem to be... go for it... but don't come crying to us later

One thing is the phrasing of the question in the poll - you ask if BAJR should become a MIFA. In fact BAJR is an organisation and could apply to become a RAO, (if Mr C was a MIFA) whereas Mr C could apply for personal membership at MIFA grade. I presume that the latter is the intention but there may be some misunderstanding.

I, like some of the others here, would suggest that you join and seek office on one of the controlling committees. It would seem to be the only way to have any real chance of influencing the future development of IFA.
Interestingly, there must be a lot of lurkers out there with opinions they don't want to share. Thirty-four votes had been cast when I last looked (including my own), but here, five contributors have made their own suggestions ammounting to three 'yesses' and two 'if you feel like its'. If you're watching and have an opinion, tell us. We're interested. Sitting at home clicking 'No' until you get bored or run out of Special Brew isn't particularlly constructive.
