thanks I stand corrected, too long on the road.

I was always under the impression that the contracts used terms similar to hostys terms like site assistant, supervisor, project officer, but now wessixs and oxford seem to be at it as well http://www.archaeologists.net/jis/online

which can only be a good thing
for employees and single operators

Yes I think its good as well as it should make a mockery of ifys and hostys pay scales. Single operators have been calling themselves archaeologists for a long time mainly to show that they undertake fieldwork. I think that if anybody fills in a context sheet or makes any recording in the field that they should be called an archaeologist.... so I dont support the site tech term. They should be called archaeologists as well.

When I were a'lad I left Uni with very little excavation knowledge, as the ten day 'training' dig was anything but. Although the degree had to have 60 days digging experience tied to it, going on a site for that small time was still insufficiant - I couldn't do more because I had kids and going off to South America for several weeks (common) or somewhere in GB was not possible. As with many recent graduates, I was learning on the job - inefficient and amateurish archaeology strikes again. I would suggest having the 'Technician' role for 6 months/year and then moving up to site assistant/archaeologist. Any archaeologist 'buddying-up' should be payed for the extra responsibility for the duration of the time. That way at least the tyro gets a chance to learn in a structured way and not in the ad hoc way of the past. Also, the unit should have some structured training in specialisms - one day a week -during the 6 months. Old lags digging next to inexperienced people - on the same wage - shome mishtake shurely?

having been a technicien de fouille and an amanuens frankly i welcome the use of the term archaeologist across the board; next to dump is supervisor, i feel

i have often heard undergraduates who didn't know what end of a trowel to use refer to themselves as archaeologists and i have heard pensioners in an arch soc say the same. in fact i have heard metal detectorists call themselves archaeologists on the grounds that they fill out 'context sheets' for their loot

i would say the term has no particular currency in a commercial world as it belongs in the amateur past - what we need is a new one that is just ours - anybody?

I am staying with archaeologist-commercially
