Have seen the call for more discussions etc, so after a long time spent lurking, wil throw this into the mix:

MoLA have invented a new grade called Site Technician, to assist their archs on site- link here:

http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/Corporate/About-us/Jobs/Current-vacancies.htm

no training mentioned in ad, and in fact they state it isn't a training role- so why the low pay MoLA?? Is within PIFA minima but in London there has been a tradition of paying well above that for years.

have heard that another unit are doing a similar thing.

I think the important title is archaeologist. At last. I was being to think that I was the only one who went around calling my self that.

If you click on the 'site technician' it takes you to another page where there's a link further down 'attached documents' to a word document with a breakdown of the job.

Looks like an assistant assistant assistant position

If it's within the PIFA pay-scale, presumably it technically meets IFA requirements. However, I don't think that'll go very far in London (I've never worked there myself, so I don't know for certain), so it's questionable how acceptable this is in reality

looks like mola think any street urchin can dig a site and fill in a context sheet - probably can

Umm, isn't slagging off a particular company supposed to be a breach of the AUP?

Folks forget about the assistant tea boy position although the filling in a context is relevant to what is an archaeologist as prentice has highlighted. This is the first time that I have ever come across a field worker being called an archaeologist by a charity unit.
http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/Corporate/About-us/Jobs/Current-vacancies.htm

It?s a momentous occasion as far as I am concerned. Don?t know where to start. I have spent years pointing out that hostys pay scales do not refer to anybody called an archaeologist and have been ignored. Might it put the cat amongst those who might want archaeology to be chartered if anybody can go around and bestow the "title" of archaeologist then its not something that can be chartered is it. Get a job with molas and you don?t need to join ify? By a single stroke molas have pointed out that all its country wide compertition do not employ any archaeologists. tramendous this is the best juju ever

The title "archaeologist" is virtually meaningless it has been given out willy nilly by all and sundry to any Tom Dick or Harriet for years. The press being some of the worst offenders. I am for ever seeing the term local archaeologist being used totally inappropriately

Have you got a pay slip with it on?
