Campaign? - Wax - 15th April 2011

All seems a bit defensive and not as well thought through as your other arguments. The Churchill Bulldog and the meercats are all clever word play on existing names of companies and as such are very relevant as distinctive positive images. BARJ is blooming obvious and the black and Wh

White mammal just came along for the ride. AS for the planet in Deep Space Nine It is pronounced BAY JAW and was not at war with any one having just come out of one

Right now I have got that off my chest.

I whole heartedly agree with the aims of the campaign but I am not sure what the strategy should be . I suppose one thing would be a template for letters to MPs and a website that details all the various iniquities that are going on and helps us find ways of drawing the publics attention to these.
( I do my own small bit behind the scenes)

And never in a million years will I see the name Mortimer as a positive but for the greater good I will bit my tongue and reign in my :face-angel:comments:face-angel:

Happy to campaign (and have done so successfully in the past on other issues) but ONLY if I can whole heartedly sign up to what this is about.

...and yes, aims and objectives are essential and these HAVE to be agreed by all parties or you are on a hiding to nothing and splinter factions will divide the "vote".

BUT I am not going to put any effort in on this front if I then find out that the damned campaign keeps the Mortimer name. It's not being parked...I get the distinct feeling of some rough shoes about to trample all over me.

Take the hint now...Mortimer is NOT popular and it is going to dissipate the interest/commitment before you start. If some marketing whizz kid came up with that, I'm afraid it sounds to me that he was very badly briefed.

I'll commit my time, energies and the money I have to support this campaign if you commit to changing the name NOW.

I wont put mine to it!

Might I suggest that individual campaigns to save museums, heritage centres and HERS are at this point unlikely to change much...however the forthcoming referendum on changes to the voting system and the local elections could be the opportunity for voters, particularly opponents of this ragbag coalition, to hammer a few nails in the coffin of the government. And to be honest I don't think it matters which way you vote. If AV is defeated the Lib Dems lose their only raison d'etre now that they have given up being the party of protest and graduated to become the party of cuts. If AV is approved I cant see many Tories voting for the subsequent bill through parliament...... So my advice in the short term would be to concentrate on the May elections and the referendum vote, use the opportunity of public meetings and media interest to raise the issues of everything these maniacs are doing and at the same time don't forget to mention Heritage/Archaeology/Museums.....

The reasoning does come across a tad bit defensive when subjected to persuasive appeal for a name change. There isn’t an issue over having a perfect name, nor one that satisfies everyone. What is apparent is the overwhelming dislike of the name Mortimer. Other names have been suggested and many, for example seem to support loveHeritage. I proposed Legacy, others like Hindsight (or Hindsite). The point is there are alternatives that have not been given due consideration. One may see the lack of consideration towards having input as nothing more than lip service. Right, wrong or indifferent, it is the perception.

What do cute, furry, tufty, twee Meerkats have to do with selling a Price Comparison web site? Simples! It is a play on words through a “foreign” pronunciation of the word “market”.

Oh Yes! Churchill (as in Winston) provided more than a little inspiration for Churchill insurance through the power of suggestion. What would Churchill advise? Be single minded, take on a bit of Churchill’s bulldog spirit and do not hedge, just tell it as it is.

Why associate a stripy faced mammal with a committed, lively and outspoken archaeological resource site and forum? Because it works; it is a play on words through the homophonetic usage of Bajr and Badger.

Bajor (Bay JOR) not Bajar (Badger) is the warring planet on Star Trek Deep Space Nine... , non homophonetic.

So to bring this tangent full circle, as “this is to big and too important for any one person, forum or organisation”. My point is that the whole is the sum of all part (icipant)s.

Absolutely, I had suggested (in a different thread) taking a well written and concise letter to a scheduled surgery meeting with "our" local MP, along with solutions to the issues we raise.

I thought debating issues was a good thing?

I had also suggested that volunteers take a well honed presentation into the hinterland to dissiminate the purpose of the campaign. Volunteers could meet with local societies, parish councils to discuss the issues regarding protecting heritage and garner grass roots support.

So ...

1. template letter that can be altered and personalised

2. volunteers to spearhead -the message

Having been negative about the Mortimer name I have been giving thought to what name I would support and why I would support it. Of the suggestions on the forum the that seems to fire my imagination is Love Heritage .

Strange that, on the surface it seems old hat but when I let my imagination run riot with it it took me to some interesting places.

The logo could be very simple a heart and a capital H, possibly intertwined like the initials of Henry VIII and Anne Bolyn

you could run a teaser campaign with it just using the heart and H

All sorts of connections to make:

Heritage Heroes
Help Heritage
Heritage Horrors

All sorts of verbs and nouns beginning with H
If you wanted a cuddly avatar how about a hare ? A good traditional British animal with all sorts of mythical associations and of course a bit mad on occasions.
Mad about heritage? mad about what is happening to it? Join the HAREs ( Heritage At Risk Envoys) Could even have one of those enamelled hare broaches as a logo

Read Terry Prachetts last Tiffany Aching book to see what the hare does when threatened by the flame

What I am saying is that if my some what addled brain can fly with Love Heritage than maybe the massed might of the little grey cells on this forum could take it to the moon ( and beyond)

Did try flights of fantasy with Mortimer but kept coming back to the death connection also image of pipe smoking not PC in post public smoking ban era . Did like " Murder Mortimer" }Smile

I must admit I've been a little bewildered by all the discussion on this and not very clear on what, if any, consensus there has been about what we can/will actually do.

Does the forum have the capacity to post a poll and put the name to the vote?

I like Mortimer for the reasons stated but I can also see why it is a risky choice. And, well, since it has garnered so much opposition I would think it might be best to pick another option that people are at least indifferent to. Personally I like the loveHeritage option because it is positive, although Hindsight is also pretty good. It would be a massive shame for all this anger and concern to wind up being cried into our beers over names.

A letter to various MPs would also be good. I'm not up to speed on all of the issues and problems but I will be happy to help anyone edit/format such a letter. Could we maybe start with some short ones that point out the big issues in a few bullet points, maybe with links to some of the resources out there already about the heritage sector as a whole, and encourage people to use a site like "theyworkforyou" to start contacting elected officials?

Also I'm not so hot with web design etc. but I would be happy to help with things like this where I can. I could certainly spend a few hours putting together a really basic webpage, if I knew what to put on it, collecting links to other information, etc. It ties in with a project I'm meant to be working on for the Digger's Forum anyway.
