Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - Jack - 22nd March 2011

Exploding nuclear reactors are really good for the environment.
Ignoring the heroic deaths of the workers at Chenobyl who gave their lives to reduce the effect of the disaster....and the not-so heroic after effects to the locals. Excluding humans from the area has created an ecological paradise, the subject of much study.

I say we need more nuclear reactors.....and more accidents...and less humans.:face-stir:

Besides.............at the moment nuclear power is the only real alternative to oil, coal and gas powerstations......unless we start using less power that is.

As to the risk from nuclear 'fallout'.............i'd worry more about the food we eat which probably has more to do with the cancer epidemic.xx(

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - Dinosaur - 22nd March 2011

Thought you'd be more worried about us having more pointless PPE foisted in our direction! ....hope there's a significant decline in the weather soon, next job's big shovelling exercise in full Class 3 and goggles xx(

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - GnomeKing - 22nd March 2011

Archaeologists + Geoscience people should have clear reasoned view on Particulate fall out - ie backed by their scientific training and knowledge of earth systems.

i would not expect to see that in the Daily mail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm_4gS_qafM&feature=player_embedded#at=80
note that there is very little in the press about the particular dangers of plutonium particle,
....or of the apparent fact that 'spent' MOX fuel rods were blow sky high out of a re-enforced concrete roof, thousands of feet into the air!

- perhapes it is not Teenage Mtant Ninja Turtle time, perhapes most of the world will see no sigificant impacts.
perhaps people will reassess nuclear power (see George Monbiot in the Guardian)

Fukushima (at the very least) is going to have major long term problems.....and perhaps we all do...Chernobyl was also a political fiasco, as well as a terrible accident.

Kystym (1957) was possibly worse, a a definite cover up by the USSR...
...and in collusion with the CIA they also covered up Lake Karachay .....

Don,t worry though i am sure we will be fine...

Even 'safe' fallout will not reach the UK for another week - heavy rains in Pacific + W.US dumping any carried there, perhaps mostly at sea.... but i said Worldwide in Title...and clearly this is not good marine event.

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - monty - 22nd March 2011

Hysteria !!!! this will surely have no effect on Britain whatsoever so everyone calm down.......................

Oh no! I hadn't thought of that......NBC suits all around then?:face-huh:

But remember, the Health and Safety Law is an 'enabling' Law..............its meant to enable an individual to turn round to the idiots and say.....

'I'm not doing that, its unsafe' without fear of retribution........
:face-stir:

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - troll - 23rd March 2011

Perhaps more of a threat.........

How many units actually test the ground that fieldstaff play in day in and day out in the UK? Pesticides/fungicides/industrial by-products etc... it`s all there and yet not one risk assessment have I seen over the years that adequately confronts this daily risk. Nuclear accidents/incidents aside- we already have enough to worry about!:face-stir:

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - Dinosaur - 23rd March 2011

Its enough of a daily risk just confronting the farmer to politely enquire what he's just sprayed you workforce with and if he knows why half of them are throwing up....

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - GnomeKing - 24th March 2011

clear reasoned views Monty please...+ remember "Worldwide" theme?

Farmers - Dino - are much easy to deal with than short sighted arch 'managers' and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turds...

yes PPE has got over the top (i have been forced in past to wear full contamination overalls + mask...in a residential playground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, hope those kids are fine....though dog shit was my main problem)

arrrg - HYSTERIA!!!!! - er, no not really, just informed view of facts (as best i know them)....yes stirring a bit to get archaeologists to lookup out of their holes ('A') at the bigger picture....would you be so sanguine if , oh i don't know, maybe you had field work in Japan, Hawaii, or US west coast? (bah, let somebody else worry about it, its not like I owe anything to archs from 'elsewhere')

(oh well it will probably be fine, my 'premium' wages + insurance will surely see me right when the NHS is infiltrated by Brainwashing Space Lizards and free health care ends - we are Archaeologist after all, why the fuck should we have to think about the Long Term ? pah...puff...cough)

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - Dinosaur - 24th March 2011

Short-term issues like those suspicious-looking rusty tail-fins sticking out of the area you've just enthusiastically taken a pick to are usually of more pressing concern, once you've got over being doubled over the pick-haft trying to get the coughing and pulse-rate back under control? Know it well.... }Smile

Radioactive Fallout and Fieldwork (Worldwide) - Wax - 24th March 2011

Now explosives I am happy with (not heard of any one in recent years in this country being killed by UXBs) Its the asbestos I worry about the Victorians and others were really very fond of it and had a hundred and one uses they put it to. Time for an asbestos spotters guide?
