Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - moreno - 9th October 2010

BAJR Admi: It is a shame, conversations with "my" FLO (everyone should have one, just don't feed 'em or they'll follow you home) have been robust! That is as in trying to get them to post or share information with the forum. I can't say I blame them. Perhaps if they did they could sort out some of the misinformation that appears. This is the only reason I've posted stuff related to my convo with "my" FLO, with their permission of course Smile Whose Dan Brown? *he he* And where is Scotland? *he he*

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - Mike.T. - 9th October 2010

It shouldn't have been granted an export licence and I don't understand why it was. Of course that wouldn't have stopped it going into the hands of a ( very ) wealthy British collector, but at least it would have kept it here.

Who knows it could end up being resold to the British Museum, by which time the asking price will probably be ?4M.

For interet's sake, I found this picture on another site (RAT) and it's sub title was just unearthed

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - Madweasels - 10th October 2010

The latest story in the local newspaper, with some local reactions and the outing of the farmer's name.

http://tiny.cc/mtj8s

Anyone care to comment on the farmer's comments?

"The farmer on whose land the helmet said he would have liked it to stay in Cumbria, but Eric Robinson remained tight lipped over whether he will receive any of the money raised from Thursday’s auction. It’s quite amazing [that it was worth so much],” he said. “I would have liked it to be kept in Cumbria but I can’t do anything about it.”

But if it was found on his land, it's his property isn't it? Why does he not seem to be able to do anything about it?

I still find this whole episode very, very perplexing.

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - BAJR - 10th October 2010

It is a bit perplexing... of course he gets half... depending on the arrangement he has with the detectorist. :face-huh:

So yes he could do something...

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - feministtheology - 14th January 2012

Does anyone know what has happened with this story? Was the finder ever identified? The buyer? The location of the helmet now? The whole story just seemed to disappear.

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - geo - 14th January 2012

Rumours only including Royalty - you can bet if there was any substance to them the tabloids would be having a field day.

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - feministtheology - 14th January 2012

Royalty? Amazing if that were true. Did the finder ever come forward? I know they hadn't around the time of the sale, but maybe they have since? I read an interesting article by an American antiquity expert which said that the helmet was Iranian or Iraqi rather than Roman. But, no other details seem to have ever emerged about the find area or the circumstances of the find. After the auction, everything just seemed to go quiet and anything you google seems to date back to that period only and nothing new seems to have come out.

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - geo - 15th January 2012

As a recall at the time of the auction and all the ethical handwringing that accompanied its sale, the media did track down the finder and the landowner for comment. Details of the find spot were also in the news i believe. I suppose after the auction the media lost interest as it became a non story that could not be sexed up with lies, half truths and inuendo any further. Time and stories move on as do the media pack.

Metal detectorist to auction Roman helmet - feministtheology - 15th January 2012

Thanks, Geo. I must try to find the info on the finder. I do remember the story with the landowner. You are right, of course, about the media moving on. Neverthless, I would have thought that there would have been more discussion within the archaeological community itself as the issue at the time was such a major one and so little was known about so many aspects of the find. I guess we will never know the full story behind Crosby Garrett.
